Barmouth walking festival. Every September.

We’ve got two cracking walks to suit different abilities to make the most of the fact that you can capitalise on stunning terrain and views starting a walk right from the heart of Barmouth. No cars, no trains, no buses needed!

On the first Saturday of the festival (September 12), Walk 3 “Up Above The Barmouth Rock” is a C+ graded 6 mile walk so if you’re not a regular mountain walker but fancy stretching yourself it will be an excellent day out but at a slow, gentle pace. There will be plenty of stops as we go uphill to talk about the town’s history ‘Old Barmouth', Dinas Oleu, the first land gifted to establish what is now the National Trust, the Frenchman’s Grave … there will be glorious views out to sea (weather permitting!) before we reaching the highest point of 1,125ft (342m) and a gradual descent looking down on the Mawddach Estuary. There will be spectacular views to end from the Panorama Walk viewpoint. Good paths but it may be uneven and muddy. Plenty of stops for history, water breaks and refreshments.

On the second Sunday of the festival (September 20) our Panorama & Passes 9 mile B+ graded walk (Walk 27) will initially cover some of the famous historical highlights out of town but at a slightly faster pace up to the famous Barmouth Panorama where the effort is repaid with a stunning outlook across the estuary, the Cadair Idris range, and the coastline stretching out into Cardigan Bay. It then weaves and pushes higher into more remote terrain reaching the extensive remains of the once flourishing Barmouth manganese mines. Some sections are rocky and steep.
