📢 Councillors vote on 24th September. Your voice still matters.

The consultation is closed, but the decision has not yet been made.

Gwynedd councillors will vote on whether to introduce the Visitor Levy on 24th September.

A levy in principle may not necessarily be wrong. But a levy in its current form — with no clear spending plan, no proper Gwynedd-specific analysis, children charged, VAT added, businesses expected to collect it, and serious risks to visitor numbers — is not the answer.

Gwynedd needs a proper plan first.

Fix the plan.
Prove the need.
Show where the money goes.
Then discuss the fairest way to fund it.

🏕️ Even people living in Wales would be asked to pay.

This levy is not just a charge on overseas tourists. It could also affect people from across Wales visiting their own communities.

A family from Caernarfon taking a camping trip to Pen Llŷn? They would still be expected to pay.

People raised in Gwynedd who had to move away, then come back to visit family and friends? They could be asked to pay too.

That raises a fair question: should people with local roots, local family and local connections really be charged to come home and stay in Gwynedd?

🏕️ Will the Visitor Levy encourage more wild camping?

Eryri National Park has reopened most of its car parks for overnight access while it reviews parking and camping issues.

That raises an important question: if people stay overnight in those car parks, how will they be charged the levy?

The answer appears to be: they won’t. During a call with the Welsh Revenue Authority, it was made clear that overnight car parks would not be affected by the levy.

So if caravans, motorhomes and tents on official sites are charged the levy, could this push more people away from regulated campsites and towards roadside parking, overnight car parks or informal wild camping?

This is already a growing issue in some areas, with pressure on roads, communities, waste facilities and the countryside.

Gwynedd needs policies that solve problems — not ones that risk making existing problems worse.

Before introducing any new charge, we need clear answers, proper planning and a proper understanding of the unintended consequences.

Felly, os yw carafanau, cartrefi modur a phebyll ar safleoedd swyddogol yn cael eu cynnwys yn yr ardoll, a allai hyn wthio mwy o bobl i ffwrdd o safleoedd gwersylla rheoledig ac at barcio ar ochr y ffordd, meysydd parcio dros nos neu wersylla gwyllt anffurfiol?

Mae hyn eisoes yn broblem gynyddol mewn rhai ardaloedd, gyda phwysau ar ffyrdd, cymunedau, cyfleusterau gwastraff a’r cefn gwlad.

Mae angen polisïau ar Wynedd sy’n datrys problemau — nid rhai sy’n peryglu gwaethygu problemau presennol.

Cyn cyflwyno unrhyw dâl newydd, mae angen atebion clir, cynllunio priodol a dealltwriaeth briodol o’r canlyniadau anfwriadol.

The Tourist Tax (aka Visitor Levy) Consultations are closing soon – please ensure you have your say!

Please complete the consultations for Conwy, Anglesey and Gwynedd even if you are not based in any of these Local Authority areas. They are requesting responses from Visitors and businesses.

Why is this so important?

Many other local authorities (LA's) across Wales are waiting to see these results before they decide whether to consult. Together these three LAs represent a very high proportion of self-catering businesses in Wales, so their decision will have a significant impact on whether the Levy is implemented beyond Cardiff.

Your response could directly influence whether these Councils decide to adopt yet another tax.

And it is only overnight guests who are paying - day visitors will not.

As day visitors outnumber those staying overnight by around 8 to 1, the net effect will be that overnight visitors, who contribute far more economic value, are being used to subsidise day visitors. As unfair as this is, the paradoxical effect of a visitor levy is that it will result in more day visitors relative to ones staying overnight as the overnight visitor numbers will decline.

In essence, everyone will be charged £1.30 per person per night, which will also be subject to VAT and apparently also including babies and toddlers! So, for a family of 4 staying a week, that'll be an additional £43.70 which either the accommodation provider can pay, pr pass on the cost to guests.

Absolutely baffled as to why these works on the *5 and A487 have been scheduled for the busiest time of the year.

Seems many of you are, too! I’ve written to the Welsh Government Transport Minister and asked him to reconsider – let’s hope common sense prevails.

PS: I’ve copied this to our Senedd members in Bangor Aberconwy too, hopefully they will reinforce the message down in Caerdydd.
