⛏️ It’s hard to imagine these tunnels were once packed with malachite.
None of what you see at Great Orme Mines is a natural cave system, it was entirely carved by hand by our prehistoric ancestors thousands of years ago as they mined for copper ore. That includes the famous chamber! 😮
Just imagine how much copper ore must once have filled these workings. But where did it all go?
That’s the question Dr Alan Williams asked. Williams’ work published in 2019 revealed that Great Orme copper travelled widely, including more than 1,000 miles from the mine, all the way to Hönö in Sweden! 🇸🇪
Just think about that… copper mined here over 3,500 years ago ended up more than 1,000 miles away! 😮
