🚌 We're really grateful to have George as part of the Henar family -
this week he and Camp-out custom conversions have insulated and laid salvaged (/kindly donated!) solid merbau hardwood flooring and test fitted the reclaimed kitchen cabinets (which came with a belfast sink and vintage brass taps - a marketplace bargain!).

♻️ We're doing our best to use reclaimed materials throughout the conversion of the bus, alongside reusing and reviving what we already have, and sourcing second hand items that we don't.

We look forward to sharing more over the coming months!

On the 6th of May 2021, people living in Wales will vote to elect their 60 members of Senedd Cymru or Welsh Parliament. Anyone who is eligible and registered to vote can choose who they want to represent them at the Senedd . The upcoming election will be the sixth election since the Sendd was re-established in 1999.

The next term of the Senedd will be crucial for the future of Welsh Agriculture, food and land use. Big decisions will have to be made with regard to future, post-Brexit regulations on farm support and rural development schemes (including agri-environmental schemes); National Forest plans, environmental regulations, climate and biodiversity targets and the post-COVID recovery.

Now, maybe more than ever, your involvement is crucial to make sure that the new Senedd and Welsh Government work for our members and enact laws and policies that support agroecological farmers, growers, and foresters.

A slightly late share of this article for -

What does your vision of a radical, intersectional food and farming movement look like?

"Local, seasonal foodways, that vary geographically and temporally. Vibrant communities of producers and growers working collaboratively to serve their local area with a short supply chain. Genuine celebration of food and farming to reflect seasonality and reduction in size and power of supermarkets, with massive taxation of corporations enabling extractive agriculture to fund agroecological and regenerative farmers."

"We need a wider variation of cultural narratives around seed! In a lot of cultures, women are the seed keepers. They ensure crop diversity is cared for, passed down and protected. This is often sacred work which cannot have a monetary value put on it. I sometimes try to step out of my narrow thinking around seeds and see them more as vessels for stories, ancestral lines and future possibilities.

In the Welsh culture, it’s interesting to hear from older women about the foods they have cooked. This often unlocks secrets to the foods that were grown across our landscapes and how these foods were integral to our lives."

As mentioned in a previous post, the barn has been everything from a "popty" (see pic 3 for the little oven built into the inglenook) to an animal shelter (pic 2)! It's about 300yrs old and was one of the original farm buildings.

Over the last few months - squeezing the work in between our full time jobs and parenting - a new floor has gone in, concrete in the fireplace has been chiseled out and repointed in traditional lime mortar, and a new hearth has been built with granite found around the property. All with some (socially distanced) help from a couple of local tradies.

This week we have installed a new log burner ourselves and restored the oak beam (it was burnt and black, still a little more to do on that). Both really satisfying jobs! ...Much more so than all the land drainage we have to work on to stop all the various leaks in various places!

What can history teach us about where food and farming go next?

In his latest book, James Rebanks provides an insiders account of the seismic changes to farming from the 1960s to the present day. Farming became brilliantly productive, he argues, but ecologically destructive.

He explains how Cumbria's landscape was transformed by more intensive agriculture, and what we can do now to bring life back to the soil, to natural habitats and still the produce the food we need.

Dan Saladino talks to shepherd James Rebanks about the future of food and farming.
