So it’s nearly 10 years since we bought The Towers and I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the place. The house was built in 1872 but what else was going on at the time Mr Platt was having the house built? Well Monet presented what is attributed as the very first impressionist painting “The Sunrise”.

Do you know about the mural on the wall of the Lady Shallott room, also painted by Richard Hackett.
The original painting, by William Holman Hunt, illustrates a scene from the 1832 poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The poem tells the story of a lady who is cursed to view the world only through a mirror and weave what she sees; if she looks directly at Camelot, the curse will fall upon her.
Moment Depicted: The image captures the dramatic moment when the Lady of Shalott has looked directly at Sir Lancelot, causing chaos as the curse takes effect. Her web is disintegrating and entangling her as she stands up from her circular loom.
Hunt was a prominent member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and this painting is considered a powerful example of later Pre-Raphaelitism, known for its meticulous detail and focus on literary subjects.
The original oil painting (completed between c. 1888–1905) is held by the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.

Richard Hackett!! It was amazing to have Richard visit 23 years after he painted this ceiling in the Drawing Room. His original brief was to paint the ceiling as if it was like looking up at the sky. However, Jackie Williams who commissioned the decoration felt it needed more so asked Richard to add mythical characters to create an audience to the right and an orchestra to the left. The choice of characters was left to Richard. They are taken from mythology, Shakespeare and modern films!
