You could combine a basketmaking course with a four day break at Kirkland. On Saturday 2 March, I’ll be teaching simple, willow frame baskets to beginners and those with some experience. There’s nothing quite like transforming willow rods into a beautiful and functional basket. Message for more details.

Just for a change from baskets, here’s our first virgin queen of the year, returning from a mating flight. She’s now in the hive and laying lots of eggs. Our bees are mostly stripey but this queen is complete black and very long. There are no other honeybees anywhere near and the mother bee was striped. Must be a throwback to black bee or Carniolan genetics which we have had in the past. Encouraged no doubt by the amazing weather, all of our colonies have made swarm preparations this year so we have many nuc boxes with queens taken out of the hives and hives with queen cells waiting to emerge. Plans to scale back are not going well.

If anyone wants a 5 frame nuc, please message me. Beekeeping is a complex business - you have to know what you are doing.

Opportunity to spend a day learning about and making your own willow basket on Friday 31 March. Make it part of a short break or just come along for the day. Message for full details. Courses can be arranged for small groups of three or four participants. If you are already a competent maker or artist in any medium, Seafield is perfect for a creative retreat. Message me to discuss the options.



Posted • Using leftover willow from last week’s course to make simple round baskets for fruit or bread proving or anything you want. Working out how to simplify methods to make it possible for a beginner to make something similar in a day. There will be a couple of spaces available on Friday 31 March if you’d like to join in.
