A fabulous walk to add to the list for 2026.
Once the walk is finished there is a fabulous pub to visit en route home called the Craven Arms at Appletreewick. It is like something from a Herriot novel, with working gas mantels, stone flags and open fires.
🥾 GRASSINGTON TO HEBDEN CIRCULAR WALK
🌿 There are some places I never get tired of walking in, and Grassington is definitely one of them. This is one of my favourite circular routes in the area: not too long, not too difficult, and ideal at any time of year, especially in winter. It brings together riverside paths, peaceful countryside, and the charm of a lovely market town and nearby village into one very enjoyable walk.
🚶♂️ The walk starts at the Grassington National Park Visitor Centre. From here, head along the main road past the southern end of the town and follow it as it bends left towards the bridge over the River Wharfe. Just before the bridge, turn left and join the Dales Way, which runs alongside the river.
⚡ Not far along, you’ll pass Grassington’s hydroelectric station, clearly visible on the opposite bank as it uses the flow of the Wharfe to generate renewable energy. It stands out as a large brick building beside the river, and I always find the contrast between this working structure and the peaceful riverside setting surprisingly appealing.
💧 Continue along the riverside path to the wonderful Linton Falls, which are always impressive whatever the season. Although the route does not officially cross the bridge here, it is hard to resist popping over briefly for alternative views of this amazing feature before crossing back and continuing along the Dales Way towards Hebden, through tranquil riverside fields with gentle views and a real sense of calm.
🌉 The path leads you to Hebden Suspension Bridge, turn away from the river towards the minor road, then find the footpath between the houses. This leads you through a shallow valley, past the trout farm, and gradually climbs out onto Mill Lane. It is a lovely, quiet section that always feels nicely tucked away from the busier paths.
☕ When you reach Mill Lane, it is well worth calling in at the excellent Old School Tea Room for a coffee and cake if it is open. After that, continue to the main road in Hebden, turn left, and then take the footpath on the right, just after the pub.
🌳 The next section is a little different in character and can feel slightly more rugged and muddy at times, especially in winter, but it is nothing to worry about. The path takes you through fields, woodland, and meadowland before joining High Lane. From here, it becomes a gentle, mainly descending track leading you back towards the upper end of Grassington.
🏘️ Back in Grassington, it is always worth taking some time to wander around this beautiful little market town. It is packed with character and is well known as one of the filming locations for All Creatures Great and Small. For me, it is the perfect place to finish a thoroughly enjoyable walk.
