When staying at the Cow Shed you are a very short stroll from a proper, unspoilt Dales pub that serves traditional, excellent quality food.

My own favourites are the Lamb, which is slow cooked, rich and meltingly tender, and the Fish and Chips. I believe the Fish and Chips are better than you will have anywhere else, the fish is fresh and the beer batter crisp but not greasy.

What will you order from the menu?

What would you choose?? 🍽🥂🍲🍠

This is one of my favourite walks from the doorstep, and there is even a coffee stop along the route. ☕️

During the Victorian era it was nicknamed ‘Little Switzerland’. It’s a fairly gentle walk but manages to take in some varied and very scenic countryside.

This picturesque walk around Stean features tranquil woods, dramatic geology and traditional hay meadows.

Many guests staying at The Cow Shed have asked what our other holiday property is like.

Churchby Cottage is a Grade II Listed cottage ideally suited for two people, situated in Lower Nidderdale which is far less rural than Upper Nidderdale but an ideal base from which one can explore Harrogate and York.

It has two bedrooms, one with a king size bed and the other with a single bed, a perfect combination if you have a snoring partner! 😀

The recent stormy weather has blown all the rain clouds away.

A 5km walk across the moors, with Lapwings and Curlews aplenty, and not a soul to be seen, just wildlife.

I was greeted to a light dusting of snow this morning and I’ve heard my first Curlew of 2026 too.

We were very thrilled to see The Cow Shed being chosen and featured in a travel guide of places to stay in North Yorkshire.

Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ adaptation has interest surging in Emily Brontë’s tortured novel of love, passion and revenge. The book takes place in the moors of northern England, and here, I’ve rounded up ten Airbnbs in the Yorkshire Dales where the film was shot.

A fabulous walk to add to the list for 2026.

Once the walk is finished there is a fabulous pub to visit en route home called the Craven Arms at Appletreewick. It is like something from a Herriot novel, with working gas mantels, stone flags and open fires.

🥾 GRASSINGTON TO HEBDEN CIRCULAR WALK

🌿 There are some places I never get tired of walking in, and Grassington is definitely one of them. This is one of my favourite circular routes in the area: not too long, not too difficult, and ideal at any time of year, especially in winter. It brings together riverside paths, peaceful countryside, and the charm of a lovely market town and nearby village into one very enjoyable walk.

🚶‍♂️ The walk starts at the Grassington National Park Visitor Centre. From here, head along the main road past the southern end of the town and follow it as it bends left towards the bridge over the River Wharfe. Just before the bridge, turn left and join the Dales Way, which runs alongside the river.

⚡ Not far along, you’ll pass Grassington’s hydroelectric station, clearly visible on the opposite bank as it uses the flow of the Wharfe to generate renewable energy. It stands out as a large brick building beside the river, and I always find the contrast between this working structure and the peaceful riverside setting surprisingly appealing.

💧 Continue along the riverside path to the wonderful Linton Falls, which are always impressive whatever the season. Although the route does not officially cross the bridge here, it is hard to resist popping over briefly for alternative views of this amazing feature before crossing back and continuing along the Dales Way towards Hebden, through tranquil riverside fields with gentle views and a real sense of calm.

🌉 The path leads you to Hebden Suspension Bridge, turn away from the river towards the minor road, then find the footpath between the houses. This leads you through a shallow valley, past the trout farm, and gradually climbs out onto Mill Lane. It is a lovely, quiet section that always feels nicely tucked away from the busier paths.

☕ When you reach Mill Lane, it is well worth calling in at the excellent Old School Tea Room for a coffee and cake if it is open. After that, continue to the main road in Hebden, turn left, and then take the footpath on the right, just after the pub.

🌳 The next section is a little different in character and can feel slightly more rugged and muddy at times, especially in winter, but it is nothing to worry about. The path takes you through fields, woodland, and meadowland before joining High Lane. From here, it becomes a gentle, mainly descending track leading you back towards the upper end of Grassington.

🏘️ Back in Grassington, it is always worth taking some time to wander around this beautiful little market town. It is packed with character and is well known as one of the filming locations for All Creatures Great and Small. For me, it is the perfect place to finish a thoroughly enjoyable walk.

March and April is a wonderful time of year to stay at The Cow Shed because the curlews return for the nesting season. (The lapwings have already arrived.)

They are my favourite bird; I love their extraordinary bills and the unique sound they make.

This fascinating bird is sadly on the RSPB’s red list but Upper Nidderdale is one of the few areas in the country where they still thrive.

Book your stay and enjoy listening to them from the garden.
