Although we are more than an little excited to finally see some rain here at Richmond… ☔️

We can’t help but marvel at the parchmarks the hot weather has revealed on site! ☀️

Parchmarks only really show in hot dry weather and are a super cool way to see below the surface...

They form where grass has grown over buried archaeology that causes the ground to dry out at a slightly different rate to nearby areas. In some cases this can be quite subtle but in the best cases they leave a clear indication of the hidden structures left behind.

This photo was taken from the very top of the keep and shows the incredibly well defined parchmarks of the old barrack block.

The lines are incredibly clear and even show the individual rooms!

All in all these marks are an impressive reminder of the rich history here at Richmond and certainly make for a great view from the top…✨
