Turner's House

Turner's House J.M.W. Turner's only surviving home. Step inside, uncover his legacy, and be inspired by Britain's greatest artist.

JMW Turner RA designed and built Sandycombe Lodge in 1813 as his retreat in once-rural Twickenham. Turner’s House Trust is fundraising to restore the building and to open it to the public in summer 2017. The Trust also plans to offer a broad programme of activities which will draw in many sectors of the public, from young children to those seeking to learn more about art and architecture, or to le

arn to paint, whatever their age. About the house

Sandycombe Lodge is a little-known treasure: here JMW Turner became his own architect, and in 1813 built a picturesque small country villa close to the Thames. Turner entertained his friends at the house, including the architect Sir John Soane, whose influence is visible throughout the building. Sandycombe Lodge was left in trust on the death of its then owner Professor Harold Livermore in 2010 and with the Trust’s objectives in mind, the Trustees commissioned an Options Appraisal with the support of the Architectural Heritage Fund. It is now 200 years since Turner built Sandycombe Lodge, and the house, listed Grade II*, is still almost totally intact but has some unsightly later additions. However it is threatened by damp and decay, is on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register and in need of major conservation. The restoration project

The Trust will repair the fabric of the house and restore it to its original appearance, as designed by Turner. Visitors will be able to explore this small but beautiful building, discovering Turner’s ways of working and learning more about his deep love of the river landscape. Everyday life in the house will come entertainingly alive through traditional and digital interpretation. The house will open five days per week, 46 weeks per year and we anticipate 9,200 visitors in the first year. The surviving section of the original garden, which is of great importance to the presentation and character of the house, will also be restored. As well as renewing the planting and reinstating the “grassy mound” revealed in a 1814 illustration, access issues will be addressed with new paths to allow maximum accessibility and where possible include provision for wheelchair users.

Finished… or unfinished?

Step inside Turner’s House and discover the fascinating story behind one of J.M.W. Turner’s most mysterious paintings.

Unfinished Business: The Mystery of Margate and Turner’s Bequest explores the extraordinary legacy of Turner’s will, the vast collection of artworks he left to the nation, and how his overlooked paintings helped change the way the world understood his genius.

At the heart of the exhibition is Margate(?), from the Sea (1835–40), on loan from the National Gallery. Once dismissed as “unfinished” and hidden away for decades, the painting later became celebrated for its dreamlike atmosphere and striking modernity, inspiring Impressionists such as Claude Monet, and artists worldwide.

En plein air workshop at Turner’s House.

Gorgeous weather for our first plein air session last week, and a fantastic group of talented artists and sketchers.

Turner built Sandycombe Lodge as a place to escape from his busy London life and connect with friends and creatives. A retreat to be inspired and take time out. We are thrilled to see his home being used as he designed it once again, as a space of inspiration and community.

If you would like to join our next session we will be back in the garden on 3rd June, and your ticket includes refreshments, private entry to the house and our new exhibition.

The gardens and ground floor of the house are fully accessible and we are very much open to all abilities.

( repeat bookings are at a 40% discount)

What an incredible pleasure it was to have - a huge Turner fan, rock royalty and talented artist in his own right- open our private view at Turner’s House this week.

A truly special moment celebrating art, creativity and inspiration in such an intimate historic setting.

On seeing ‘Margate’ for the first time, he called it “a sweep of colours and a very subtle painting”… and commented that “ It’s a dream come true for me, as I always admired Turner growing up ”.

An amazing moment, a wonderful evening and the perfect start to our 2026 exhibition!

Entry to the exhibition is included in your ticket price and we look forward to welcoming you very soon-
We are open Weds- Sun 12-4pm; tickets in bio.

Enormous thanks to for helping us make this happen.
