What do you do when you’ve finally finished restoring a listed Victorian mansion made up of seven London townhouses, nearly 200 years of history and opened its doors as a hotel?

You throw a party of course, a massive one.

Bagpipes at the door. Live painting. Poetry on demand. Fragrance bottled on the spot. Cocktails, speeches and a Tiramisu Theatre, because is it even a party if you don't have one of those?

A night to celebrate the people, the building and the extraordinary amount of work that went into bringing this old house back to life.

A new era has begun. 🥂

Before the legend, there was a 24-year-old Jimi Hendrix finding his feet in London. One day in the late sixties, Hendrix and his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham headed to the Queensway Ice Rink, despite neither of them having skated before, to give it a go. ⛸️🎸

The best bit? The rink is still there. More than half a century later, you can head to Queensway and attempt the very same thing.

Just down the road from Hyde & Seek. You never quite know what you’ll find around here. 👀

We spent a long time thinking about how this space should feel; for us a good hotel lobby should make an entrance feel like an occasion.

We hadn’t quite accounted for the fact that people might start dancing through it.

In hindsight, that feels like a very good sign.

Even Londoners don't really know that this festival exists... For nine days in September, doors that are usually firmly closed suddenly open.

Open House Festival gives you a look inside some of London’s hidden buildings, private spaces and architectural secrets, completely free.

And there’s plenty to be nosy about near Hyde & Seek. Think Victorian buildings, Gothic chapels, secret mews and places you’ve probably walked past a hundred times without knowing what was behind the door.

In the 1960s, Portobello Road became one of the beating hearts of Swinging London. Cheap rents, vintage treasures and a wonderfully eclectic mix of people drew artists, musicians, designers and filmmakers to the neighbourhood, turning it into a hot bed of creativity. Vivienne Westwood sold jewellery here. Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Mick Jagger all came to browse.

London is best explored on foot. Especially when you start in the right place. 📍

Step out of Hyde & Seek and some of the capital’s best-known names are within easy reach. Wander through Hyde Park to Kensington Palace, stop in at the Serpentine Galleries, head towards the Royal Albert Hall, or carry on into town for an afternoon on Oxford Street.

See a lot. Walk a lot. Then come back, shut the door and hide away for a while.
