For two, or perhaps four, who want to disappear into rural France for a week, this is a rather lovely place to do it. Maison Occitane sits among 30 acres of meadows and olive trees in the Lot, where the views stretch for miles, and ancient villages punctuate the countryside. Pasted text

Set within the grounds of a 350-year-old manor house, the cottage has been restored by its interior-designer owners, so this is country living with a little more polish. Inside, there’s an eclectic mix of art, colour and beautifully chosen pieces, alongside two en-suite bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen and living space, and a wood-burning stove for cooler evenings.

Outside is where summer really takes over: breakfast on the south-west-facing terrace, afternoons beside the 12-metre private pool, dinner from the barbecue and thirty acres to wander when you fancy stretching your legs.

You’re firmly in la France profonde, but market mornings and good food aren’t far away. Puy-l’Évêque and Prayssac are around 15 minutes away for restaurants, bakeries and local markets, while Cahors – and its famously good w**e – is around half an hour by car.

Pastel houses, little fishing boats and lunch overlooking the harbour. Welcome to Cassis 🇫🇷

Tucked between the Calanques and the great golden cliffs of Cap Canaille, this little Provençal port is all pastel façades, painted fishing boats and café tables spilling out beside the water.

Come for a morning wandering the old streets, stay for grilled fish and a glass of local Cassis w**e overlooking the harbour, then take a boat out towards the turquoise coves of Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En-Vau.

The Dordogne does country houses oh-so well, and Le Manoir d’Alvère comes with four hectares of grounds, a heated pool and a village within walking distance.

The traditional manor has been beautifully renovated, with seven bedrooms, old fireplaces, a piano and doors that spill straight out into the gardens. Most summer days, though, will probably revolve around the 14-metre pool, long lunches on the shaded terrace and deciding whether anyone has the energy for another game of boules.

Then, when you do want to leave, the Dordogne is waiting. Walk ten minutes into the village for fresh bread, coffee, or dinner; head to the river at Limeuil for a day on the water; or make for Sarlat and spend Saturday morning wandering its market. Bergerac is around 30 minutes away too.

If you’ve ever wanted to gather everyone together and disappear into the French countryside for a week, Château Siregarde gives you 50 acres in which to do it.

This beautifully restored château sits among gardens, fields and woodland in Haute-Garonne, with 11 bedrooms and the kind of rooms an old French house ought to have: a grand hallway, blue drawing room, music room with a piano and a library with a billiard table. Outside, there’s a 20-metre heated pool, pétanque and an 18th-century terrace for dinners overlooking the grounds. ㅤ
You’re deep in the countryside here, but not quite cut off from the good things. The local shops, baker, patisserie, restaurants and an excellent w**e shop are five minutes away, while Toulouse is around 45 minutes by car. Or stay exactly where you are, swim, wander the grounds and see how long it takes someone to suggest another game of pétanque.

HOME OF THE WEEK | Château Marchesseau

If your idea of a week in Bordeaux involves vineyards, long lunches and a château to call your own, this should do rather nicely.

Château Marchesseau sits within 15 hectares of private grounds and vineyards in Lalande-de-Pomerol, and the estate even produces its own w**e. Inside, there’s an impressive 400m² of space and five ensuite bedrooms, while outside you’ll find formal gardens, a heated pool and a shaded terrace made for long dinners.

Then there’s the location. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol are both just 12 minutes away, putting some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated w**e country practically on the doorstep. Spend the day visiting domaines and exploring Saint-Émilion, then head home for a swim and a bottle from the estate.

If staying in a French château is on your list, this is quite the place to do it.
ㅤ
Château La Manay began life in the 15th century, with later 18th-century additions, and today sits within 36 acres of secluded grounds in the Pays de la Loire. There’s a moat crossed by a stone bridge, a one-and-a-half-acre lake, apple and pear orchards, tree-lined paths and a heated 13.5m swimming pool tucked into the grounds.

Inside, there’s plenty of château character too, with a formal dining room, library, traditional fireplaces and seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. And when you do venture beyond the estate, the village of Lombron is within walking distance, Le Mans is around 20 minutes away and the châteaux of the Loire Valley make for some rather good day trips.
