Coffee by the window is a gentle start to a day at Buxted Park. When you are ready, step outside and take a little longer on the way through the courtyard.

The entrance you pass through was reshaped in the 1940s by Basil Ionides. He brought its stone doorway from West Harling Hall in Norfolk, giving an older piece of craftsmanship a place in the house as it stands today.

Beyond the fountain, the grounds open towards the water. Walk far enough to see the house reflected there, then return by the same entrance with a better sense of its story.

The pleasure of staying at Buxted Park over Christmas is having time around the celebrations.

Our two and three night stays include Ch*****ne receptions, seasonal dinners and a traditional Christmas lunch. You can linger over the meal, knowing there is no journey home to make afterwards.

Dinner in Buxted Park’s Orangery brings seasonal Sussex cooking together with w**e from Villa Saletta, the Hands family’s estate in Tuscany.

Saletta Riccardi is a 100% Sangiovese produced at Villa Saletta from grapes picked entirely by hand. Aged in oak, it is a rich, elegant expression of the estate, with ripe red fruit and savoury complexity.

The Orangery’s chef’s menu pairs it with Merrifield Farm duck breast, cherry and endive marmalade and dauphinoise. The w**e’s red fruit complements the cherry, while its freshness balances the richness of the duck.

Take a seat overlooking the gardens and enjoy an evening with time for each course.

The Basil Ionides Suite has a story beyond its name.

Ionides owned Buxted Park when fire damaged the house in 1940. During its restoration, he brought salvaged architectural details from London into the interiors. That history remains part of the character of the house today.

The suite sits in the main house, with patterned walls, a chandelier and views across the gardens and grounds. Take coffee in the seating area before heading out, then return to a super king size bed and a bath. There is a bed ready for your dog too.

An early morning is a lovely time to see another side of Buxted Park.

From the house, the sun rises over the parkland between two valleys. Step outside and the fountain reflects the entrance front, framed by a balustraded courtyard added in the 1940s. Beyond it, the drive leads through trees that are beginning to take on their autumn colour.

There is history in the approach too. Buxted Park’s main drive follows the route of the former village street, while St Margaret’s Church still stands close to the house. It is a reminder that these grounds have a story extending well beyond the present hotel.
