Our Head Chef Glen Merriott didn’t exactly choose the kitchen. His mum dropped him at a pub on his last day of school, told him he had a job and, in his words, said: “Crack on.”

Thankfully, he did, because had he not, Talland wouldn’t have been nearly as tasty.

On the blog now, Glen shares his culinary career path, the Cornish produce that shapes his cooking now, and why autumn means roasting, braising, preserving and “proper cooking”.

Head to the website, have a read, then book a table to taste his cooking for yourself! 🍽️

We know. It’s August. Talk of Christmas feels wildly premature…

But there are some things that don’t particularly reward spontaneity, and disappearing to the Cornish coast for three days of champagne, five-course dinners, sea air and absolutely no washing up is one of them ✨

Christmas at Talland brings mulled wine and carols, festive feasts, our famous quiz, Boxing Day walks and plenty of time beside the fire. New Year’s Eve is a slightly more glamorous affair: glad rags, champagne, Glen’s Gala Buffet, live music, dancing into 2027 and a Bloody Mary waiting on New Year’s Day.

Both our Christmas and New Year three-night stays are already limited, so consider this your entirely unapologetic nudge to start making plans.

Future you, holding a glass of fizz with the sea outside and no turkey tray to scrub, will be rather pleased you did.

A trio of taps, each with its reasons:

🍺 Asahi, because it is Jack’s favourite lager (and when you write the drinks list, you get to make the rules…)

🍺 Proper Job, because it’s made not far from here and is arguably the best IPA you’ll find on draught in all of Cornwall

🍺 And Harbour, because it’s local, light and washes down a sea view particularly well

Take your pick or try all three. They were all made for Sundays like these, washing down lunch in the sun, while the sea does its thing a few feet from where you’re sitting. We’ll cheers to that! 🍻

A Seat by the Sea still waits for someone who could use a little good news.

Each month, we invite someone who is having a bit of a tough time to join us for lunch or afternoon tea, with a plus one and with absolutely no catch. Just a small act of kindness, served with Cornish views 🌊

We’ve received many nominations and we’d love you to keep them coming! There is no deadline and no need to make a fuss; no tagging them on social media or even mentioning you’ve put them forward. We’ll keep it quiet. Simply nominate them privately using the short form on our website, or leave a note with reception next time you’re passing.

Sometimes a seat by the sea and time to pause make all the difference 🤍

It’s Friday night. Someone else opened the wine, there’s a table with your name on it waiting downstairs, and a bath as deep as you like waiting once you’re finished. Breakfast is taken care of too, not a frying pan in sight or sink.

Here’s an idea for a school holiday afternoon we think you might rather like: lawn games that drift into lunch, boat spotting, ice cream hampers, and the sort of sea air that tends to tire little people out beautifully.

The beach is close enough for even little legs too, so you can wander down for rockpools and paddles, before making your way back up the hill for a perfectly chilled reward and a toast to making it through another day 🍷

There are quiet moments to be found in even the busiest of summers by the bay 🌊

Countless gins sipped by the sea, innumerable afternoon teas devoured, a terrace full for every meal. But it isn’t over yet…there’s still a little last-minute availability tucked away in August and September for those who are not quite ready to let summer go.

And for anyone already dreaming of Cornwall’s quieter side, our new three-night autumn escape is now to tempt you: three nights, two dinners, one afternoon tea on us. It’s available to book on our website now.

Talland is far beyond ordinary, so it only makes sense that our drinks list is too.

99 gins, including one of our own. A wine list that barely ends: Sangiovese for something familiar, a Cornish Pinot Noir for something that’ll surprise you, and a reserve list for when the night calls for it.

On tap: Asahi, simply because it’s Jack’s favourite. Proper Job, brewed a short drive from here. Harbour Lager that’s local, light and particularly good with a sea view.

And lesser spotted cocktails too, like the Jaffa Martini; a boozy ode to Jack’s lifelong infatuation with Jaffa Cakes.

Pop in for one. Or stay a while.

🗞️ Breaking news from the bay! 🗞️

There are mere hours to go until Date Night returns to Talland. Tonight’s headline is a Seafood Platter built for two: half chilled lobster, prawn cocktail, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel pâté, local crab salad, and enough bread and fries to mop up the best bits.

Stop the presses, pause all other plans, and put some spontaneous Date Night romance on the evening’s agenda. Book one of our last tables on the website, or give us a call and we’ll take care of it for you 🍽️

We have a saying at Talland and it’s one you’ll hear Jack say often: “The answer is always yes”

Sometimes that even means lobster in bed on a Friday night…
