Welcome to all our Nearly Wild Camping Club members camping at Wray Valley this weekend, especially the ones that arrived after dark and have yet to see the woodland that surrounds them! The Dartmoor evening chorus was going at full strength earlier

A long weekend, finally.

There's something specific about the first proper bank holiday camp of the year. The kettle takes a bit longer to boil. You've packed too much. The light stays low until nine. None of it matters.

4 BAGS OF RUBBISH REDUCED TO HALF A BAG! THE POWER OF SORTING! 🏕️♻️

This morning, we sorted through four entire black sacks of mixed rubbish left behind by just six people over a single weekend.

Take a look at the photos to see some of what we found: brand-new airbed boxes and heaps of clean recyclables mixed in with landfill! After separating everything properly, we were left with just half a black sack of actual landfill waste - mostly food-soiled paper plates and paper towels. But here is the thing: even that half-bag could have been avoided entirely if they had used reusable plates and washable towels!

🛑 The hidden cost: While we appreciate that everything was put in the bin rather than left around the site, commercial waste collection for small businesses is absolutely not free. Campsites pay for every single bin lift and every kilogram sent to landfill. Thoughtless waste sorting directly drains resources from local independent sites like us.

When you stay on a campsite, please remember that how you use the bins matters.

Here is how you can help:

❌ Leave packaging at home: Unbox new tents, chairs, and sleeping bags at home. Put the clean cardboard straight into your household green recycling boxes. If your equipment fails while you are here - take it home again for disposal.

❌ Ditch the paper plates: Food-soiled paper plates and wooden cutlery cannot be recycled. They are not the eco-friendly choice. They contaminate clean recycling streams and quickly fill up campsite landfill bins. If your site allows a campfire why not use them to start your fire. Avoid the waste entirely by switching to reusable metal or plastic.

❌ Take it home anyway: Even if there is room in the campsite bins, please take your rubbish and sorted recycling home with you. Leaving the bins clear ensures there is always space for other guests who might genuinely need it.

A little bit of effort before and during your trip saves hours of sorting later and keeps Dartmoor beautiful. Leave no trace!
