Well the first reason is...why wouldn't you?! September might be one of our favourite months in the New Forest. You can start to see little subtle changes in the season, but the days are still warm, with evenings cooling down enough to warrant snuggling underneath a blanket with a cup of tea 😌 🫖

September brings Pannage pigs snuffling for acorns, autumnal colours making the forest turn every shade of orange, yellow and red, curious fungi popping up on the forest floor, and delicious dishes rustled up by local producers using fruits and vegetables from the autumn harvest.

We can't wait for all of it 🌳

Save this post if you are on the hunt for the best picnic spots in the New Forest 🌳

From coast to forest, secluded spots and ones where the ponies come to join you, the New Forest National Park and its surrounding coastline have some wonderful places to enjoy a picnic.

Our local Lymington staff know exactly where to go – so here are a few of their handpicked favourites 🧺

📍Rhinefield Ornamental Drive with towering Giant Redwood trees and Douglas firs, you can enjoy your sandwich whilst spotting the deer peering through the trees
📍Wilverley Plain is a large grassy expanse that’s perfect for picnics, kites and ball games. There’s plenty of parking and lots of tracks and trails through the surrounding woods
📍Buckler’s Hard ~ soft grassy banks by the water make an incredibly peaceful and lovely place to sit and watch boats bobbing along and kayakers paddling past
📍Take binoculars and a picnic to Keyhaven Nature Reserve ~ a Site of Special Scientific Interest
📍Follow Danes Stream through Milford on Sea and picnic beside the stream, watching the ducks and dragonflies. It’s a lovely spot for little ones!
📍Barton on Sea for a picnic with far-reaching views. There are plenty of benches and spots along the grassy stretches for blanket banquets before heading down to the pebble and soft sandy beach for a swim.
