🐴 Keeping you & the ponies safe at Tippbarlake gathering 2026
We're looking forward to welcoming everyone to the gathering on Sunday 18 October!
It's a wonderful opportunity to experience a traditional Exmoor pony gathering, and we want everyone, including our ponies, to have a safe and enjoyable day.
🐴 Please give the ponies plenty of space
Our ponies are free-roaming, semi-wild animals. Although they're used to life on the moor, gathering day can be unsettling, and their behaviour can be unpredictable.
Please don't approach, touch, feed or attempt to stop the ponies. Even if they appear calm, they can change direction or move suddenly.
👋 Please follow our helpers' directions
We'll have helpers positioned at key points along the route, including popular viewing areas such as Lancombe Crossing.
They're there to guide you to safe viewing areas and help keep everyone clear of the ponies' route.
Please follow their instructions, even if it means moving from your chosen spot. A good view is never worth putting yourself or the ponies at risk.
🐕 Dogs
We strongly recommend leaving dogs at home. If you do bring a dog, it must be kept on a short lead and well away from the ponies at all times.
👨👩👧 Children
We love seeing families enjoying the gathering! Please keep children close and under supervision at all times, particularly when the ponies are approaching or passing.
🚗 Roads and access
Please park considerately, keeping gateways, tracks and roads clear for the gatherers, local residents and emergency vehicles.
The ponies will be travelling along the road from Scobhill Gate to Brendon Barton. Please keep well clear of the route and follow directions from our helpers.
📸 Watching and taking photographs
There are some fantastic opportunities to watch and photograph the ponies, particularly at Lancombe Crossing.
Please enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance. Don't step into the ponies' path for a better photograph, use flash photography close to the ponies or do anything that might startle them.
🌿 Remember, this is a working gathering
The ponies don't follow a timetable! Their movements can be unpredictable, and the gatherers need plenty of space to work safely.
Please don't follow the herd, interfere with the gathering or enter areas where you've been asked to keep clear.
🌦️ Dress for Exmoor weather!
The weather on Exmoor can change quickly, so please come prepared with warm layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear. The ground can be wet and uneven, and you may be standing around for a while waiting for the ponies!
⚠️ Your safety, your responsibility
Everyone attending does so at their own risk and is responsible for their own safety and that of any children or dependants in their care.
This is a working gathering across open moorland, tracks and public roads, involving free-roaming ponies, horses and moving vehicles. Please be mindful of the terrain, weather and activity around you.
Our helpers will do their best to guide everyone safely, but we ask all visitors to take responsibility for themselves and follow any safety instructions given.
💚 Thank you for helping us look after our ponies and each other.
We love sharing this special Exmoor tradition with you, and your cooperation helps make it possible for everyone to enjoy the day safely.
