The Great Hotel Auction of 1856

Imagine walking into the Valley of Rocks Hotel in March 1856 to find almost everything up for sale.

This extraordinary auction notice offered the entire contents of the hotel to the highest bidder. It paints a remarkable picture of Victorian life, listing 150 mahogany and rosewood chairs, more than 40 dining and billiard tables, chandeliers, china, mirrors, carpets, feather beds, an eight-day clock, carriages, harnesses and even the stable equipment.

Every one of these items had once been part of the daily life of the hotel. Guests would have dined from the china, relaxed in the chairs, slept in the four-poster beds and gathered beneath the chandeliers.

Far from marking the end of the Valley of Rocks Hotel, this was most likely part of a change in ownership or tenancyβ€”a common occurrence during the Victorian era. The hotel continued its story and would go on to evolve into the magnificent building we know today.

But here's the thought that really captured our imagination...

Where did all of those items go?

Could one of those mahogany tables still be standing in a local home? Could a mirror, chair or clock have been passed down through generations? Perhaps your family has an old photograph or a story connected to the sale.

We'd love your help solving a little piece of the hotel's history.

If you've ever been told that a piece of furniture came from the Valley of Rocks Hotel, or you have a family story connected with the hotel, please share it with us in the comments or send us a message. You never know – you might be holding a genuine piece of the hotel's past.

Every photograph, every document and every memory helps us uncover another chapter of the Valley of Rocks Hotel's remarkable story.

Through the Years – preserving the history, celebrating the heritage, and discovering the stories of the Valley of Rocks Hotel together.

Hidden Heritage | Details That Tell Our Story

Some of the most fascinating pieces of our hotel's history aren't always on display.

This beautiful display cabinet was discovered tucked away in a long-forgotten room, hidden from view for many years. Rather than letting it fade into the past, it was carefully restored and given a new place within the Valley of Rocks Hotel.

With its intricate woodwork, delicate glazing and elegant craftsmanship, it perfectly reflects the character and attention to detail found throughout our Victorian building.

It's easy to walk past pieces like this without knowing their storyβ€”but that's exactly why we love sharing them.

Every corner of the Valley of Rocks Hotel has a history, and sometimes the most remarkable discoveries are the ones that have been quietly waiting to be found.

Have you noticed this cabinet during your visit?

The Valley of Rocks Hotel... as it stood around 1865.

It's hard to imagine that when the hotel first opened in 1807, Lynton itself was little more than a church, a farm and a handful of cottages.

By the time this photograph was taken, the hotel had already grown. An extension had been added in 1833, providing additional guest accommodation as more visitors discovered the beauty of Lynton and the Valley of Rocks.

Just a few years later, in 1869, the original two-storey white building at the front of the hotel was replaced with the magnificent Victorian entrance, lounge and atrium that still welcome guests today. Importantly, much of the 1833 extension remained and continues to form part of the hotel you see today.

This image captures a fascinating moment in the hotel's evolution – a bridge between its humble beginnings and the grand Victorian landmark it would soon become.

Over more than 200 years, the Valley of Rocks Hotel has continually adapted and evolved, but one thing has never changed... its spectacular setting overlooking one of the most beautiful landscapes in Britain.

✨ Can you spot the different sections of the hotel? Knowing what we know today, it's incredible to think that parts of the building in this photograph are still standing over 190 years after they were first built.

Hidden Heritage | A Fireplace Full of History

Long before central heating, the fireplace was the heart of every grand hotel.

Guests would gather around it after a day exploring Exmoor, warming themselves by the fire, sharing stories of their adventures and making plans for the next day.

This beautiful fireplace remains one of the hotel's most striking features. From its intricate cast ironwork to the colourful decorative tiles, it's a wonderful example of the craftsmanship that gives the Valley of Rocks Hotel so much of its character today.

While fashions have changed over the years, features like this remind us of the care and attention that went into creating a building designed to be admired as much as enjoyed.

It's another piece of the Valley of Rocks Hotel's story, quietly standing the test of time.

Have you spotted this fireplace during your visit?
