Train Carriage on the Hill

Train Carriage on the Hill A beautiful train carriage for eco holidays, retreats or romantic breaks;
our peaceful glamping cabin on a stunning, remote hillside off-grid in Mid Wales

Getting away from it all is easier than you may think, in this surprising little carriage perched on a secluded hill. It is a unique space in many ways, but I can describe to you some of our favourites! The carriage is on the land of a working smallholding and community. The farmhouse has several people living and sharing the garden, and we are completely off-grid, with our own fresh water supply,

and self-contained small hydro system to provide all our electricity! The carriage itself is made from a guards wagon. Before braking could be done remotely from the engine, a guard traveled in this wagon, and would have had to manually brake all of the carriages when necessary. When technology advanced, these wagons were mostly sold off to farmers by the railways, as well-built sheds and cabins. This one was winched to the top of our hill and renovated, and we are very excited to be sharing it! Ideal for retreats, romantic breaks, or for a base on a walking or cycling trip, the carriage is close enough to civilization to be convenient (the market town of Machynlleth is a 15 minute drive away) but also remote enough to really, truly relax. I also have a treatment room in the house, so if you would like to book in for a Holistic Massage as part of your holiday, just let me know and I'll be very happy to see you. The farmhouse who's land the carriage is on, is the only dwelling on this side of the mountain, so if peace is what you are looking for then you have come to the right place. However civilization is close at hand! The charming market town of Machynlleth is a 15 minute drive away, and has a vibrant community and enough shops to get you everything you need. There are plenty of popular attractions, for example the Centre for Alternative Technology for those interested in treading more lightly, or the Dyfi Osprey Project, a nesting site for ospreys. We are nestled in the southern edge of the Snowdonia National Park, so there is plenty of exploring for walkers and cyclists to do- Cadair Idris is one of my favourite mountains and it's only 15 minutes away...

We are 1.5 miles from the A487, up a forestry track- fairly well maintained but with a smattering of potholes, for the rally driver in us all. Full, easy directions will be sent upon booking! There is space to park, with a short walk (1 minute) up a fairly steep hill with steps, so please consider if you can manage this before booking! I lived up here without a car for 10 years, and it is certainly possible to manage. Trains come regularly to Machynlleth from the Shrewsbury / Birmingham direction, and from Machynlleth there is a good bus service coming to Pantperthog. It is a 25 minute walk (again, uphill!) to get to the carriage from the bus stop. Of course there is always the taxi- from Machynlleth it costs ÂĢ8-ÂĢ10.

Spot the difference..!
Finally the roundhouse bed has an incredible, burr oak headboard.
It's the absolute centrepiece in my opinion.

The sound of bees, birds singing in the cherry tree, the intoxicating smell of the climbing rose. Planting this was the best decision imaginable and this is the first year it's bloomed as abundantly as this!
Sure the bath could look a bit more instagrammable, but as an experience it's up there with my favourites 😍
And of course, all the water is heated by the hydro (the gas boiler you can see is backup for if the river runs low in dry summers).

Yes! A proper Spring/ early summer where there is actually sun AND rain.
Being offgrid and depending on rainfall for both electricity and water, the last several years long dry summers have been a mixed blessing, and watching the streams and the hydro meter needle go down a lot earlier each year (when in my childhood it was a late August/ early September thing, if at all), and a couple of weeks later if it was still dry then our water supply running out too, adds a strange anxiety to the endless hot days.
Maybe this year we won't need to rig up our bizarre trailer contraption to get water from, or shower at mum's or Kait's! 😁
Plus look how green everything is. Happy goats.

This was a surprise for someone's birthday. What you can't see is the champagne in the fridge ðŸū

Meet Mouflon, otherwise known a Mouffles (moof-els).
She arrived on a rainy night about a month ago, from the hills where a small herd of long-feral sheep have wandered for at least 15 years.
I don't know what happened to her herd, or why she decided to come here, but she was in a sorry way and in her gentle way she asked me to take care of her.
So we gained her trust over some time, which was difficult as she seems baffled or indifferent to 'food' as offered by humans, even hay.
But she is calm around us.
I didn't want her to go in the fields in case she was carrying anything that might endanger the goats, so she's been enjoying our garden 😆
But 3 weeks ago after a visit from the vet, we caught her and treated her for various things, gave her a vitamin shot, and trimmed off the very worst of her clumpy wool (we'll give her a proper haircut later in the Spring), so a couple of days ago I let her into the goat field.
We kept a very careful eye at first- I know it's possible with care to keep them together, but especially with kids I didn't want to risk anyone getting bullied.
But my concerns were for nothing as all of them seem to have just quietly accepted each other's existence and carried on. The kids have been sniffing and exploring her today, while she just lay there peacefully.
Anyway, I am hoping to be able to show you her improvement in time.
She's such a peaceful and lovely personality.

Such a beautiful, Spring-like day to let the herd out for a frolic and some juicy fresh grass!
This was the first time the babies all came out too.
The adults were so delighted to be back in their favourite field, skipping about just like the little ones!
And they are all tucked back into their cosy barn now for the night.

Look at our lustrous new curtains at the carriage! Handmade in fair-trade velvet locally, and perfectly fitting the new decor at the carriage.
I love them, and they'll keep the carriage even cosier as the nights draw in.
