IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY! ✨

Seven years ago this week, we reopened the doors of The Old House 1147 following the restoration and redevelopment of our twelfth century inn.

In those seven years, we’ve welcomed thousands of guests through our doors, added 16 guest bedrooms, and hosted hundreds of beautiful weddings.

From celebratory dinners and overnight stays, to champagne-filled wedding mornings and packed dance floors. TOH has become a place filled with memories, laughter and moments we are so proud to be a part of.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing team for their hard work, passion and commitment over the years, and to every customer, wedding couple and local supporter who has been part of our incredible journey so far.

Today, the beautiful old church opposite The Old House remains an important part of the community in Llangynwyd. It’s a place of history, faith and quiet beauty.

But centuries ago, its role was far more significant.

Long before telephones, radios or modern roads existed, warning beacons were lit across the Welsh hillsides to signal danger and alert surrounding communities.

St Cynwyd’s Church, Llangynwyd, formed part of this historic network, where warning fires could be seen from miles away across the valleys and hillsides.

Church towers, hilltops and castles were often chosen as beacon points due to their visibility , allowing messages to travel rapidly across the country long before technology connected communities.

A fascinating reminder that some of the most beautiful historic buildings once played a vital role in protecting the communities around them.

During your next visit, take a stroll around the village and admire the incredible history of Llangynwyd. A little piece of Welsh heritage that has watched over the valley for centuries.

A WELSH LOVE STORY |

As a popular Welsh wedding venue, we feel blessed to play a part in so many love stories, but in honour of St. Dwynwen’s Day, here is a snippet of the famous Welsh love story, The Maid of Cefn Ydfa…

Ann Maddocks (born Thomas) was a Welsh maid, who according to tradition was forced to marry against her wishes, and eventually died pining for her true love.

Legend states that Ann, of Cefn Ydfa, Llangynwyd, fell in love with a local poet and thatcher, Wil Hopcyn. When this was discovered, they were forbidden to see each other.

Ann was kept prisoner in her Manor House, yet continued her relationship with Wil Hopcyn by sending love letters in secret, taken by one of her maidservants who hid them in a hollow oak tree on the Cefn Ydfa estate.

Legend has it that when these letters were discovered, and Ann’s writing materials were taken away, she took to writing on leaves plucked from the tree outside her window, in her own blood.

Ann is said to have pined so desperately for her true love that she fell seriously ill. On her death bed, she requested to see Wil Hopcyn, and when he arrived, she died in his arms. ❤️

Ann Maddocks is buried in St Cynwyd’s Church, Llangynwyd, whilst a memorial cross dedicated to Wil & Ann stands outside The Old House 1147.
