A couple of wild guests visited us last week.
They mostly behaved themselves whilst running around enjoying the sunshine 🐓
Let’s hope they leave us a good review!

One of the nicest parts of what we do is seeing how people connect with this place.

During his stay, one of our guests spent time sketching the hut — and before he left, he gifted us this incredible hand-drawn piece.
Completely unexpected, and something we’ll genuinely treasure, thank you 🙏

Mayland sits right on the Dengie Peninsula, next to the Crouch Valley, which has a unique microclimate ideal for growing grapes — mild temperatures, lots of sunshine, and good soil conditions

That’s why you’ve got several vineyards within 10–20 minutes, which is pretty rare in the UK.

This week has started off beautifully. Suns out, hut is clean, birds are happy and our chickens are laying more eggs (means they are happy girls).
Now the warm weather is here, we need to look at some options for cooling our guest down during their stay, any ideas? Ice bath maybe?

5 Perfect Things to Do in Mayland for a Slow Couples Escape

🌿 1. Walk the Saltmarsh & Blackwater Estuary
The biggest draw of Mayland is the landscape itself. Quiet coastal paths, big skies, and wildlife make it ideal for a slow wander together.
• Walk along Maylandsea waterfront
• Explore nearby nature reserves and creeks
• Spot birds, boats, and endless horizon views

👉 The area is known for scenic trails and peaceful countryside escapes, perfect for unwinding together

🌊 2. Sunset at the Water’s Edge
Simple but honestly one of the best things you can do here.
• Head down to the estuary in the evening
• Bring a drink or picnic
• Watch the sun drop over the marsh

This is one of those “you don’t get this in the city” moments.

🍷 3. Pub Lunch or Drinks in Burnham-on-Crouch
Just a short drive away, this is your closest proper “date spot”.
• Riverside pubs and cosy bars
• Boats, marina views, and a bit of buzz
• Great for a long lunch or evening drinks

🚶‍♂️ 4. Explore Maldon & Promenade Park
A slightly busier option if you want a change of pace.
• Walk along the famous promenade
• Grab fish & chips by the water
• Watch boats and estuary life

Promenade Park is one of Essex’s most popular outdoor spots with scenic views and relaxed walking routes

🌿 5. Visit RHS Hyde Hall Gardens
About 15–20 minutes away, this is a really good “slow date” option.
• Beautiful landscaped gardens
• Seasonal flowers and open views
• Quiet corners to wander and talk

💭 Bonus (and honestly the best one):
Do Nothing at All
• Cook over the fire
• Sit outside with a drink
• Read, nap, slow down

That’s kind of the whole point of being here.

Loo with a View 🌳
Our composting toilet, how it works and why it's great!

How to Use the Compost Toilet
1. Lift the lid and use as normal
2. Add a scoop of sawdust/wood shavings after use
3. Close the lid

Why Use a Compost Toilet?

🌿 It Saves Water
A traditional toilet can use litres of clean drinking water every flush. Compost loos use none — which makes a big difference, especially off-grid.

🌍 It’s Better for the Environment
There’s no sewage system, no chemicals, and no waste being flushed away. Everything is handled naturally and responsibly.

🔇 It’s Quiet and Low Impact
No pipes, no noise, no infrastructure — just a simple system that works with nature, not against it.

🌱 It Supports Natural Cycles
Compost toilets turn waste into something that can safely return to the earth (managed properly, of course). It’s a much more circular way of living.

😊 It’s Cleaner Than You Expect
Because of the cover material and airflow, compost loos are:
• Odour-controlled
• Dry (not messy)
• Surprisingly pleasant to use

Most people are genuinely surprised after their first go.

Using a compost toilet is one of those small shifts that connects you more to where you are.

It’s part of the off-grid experience — simple, thoughtful, and a reminder that things don’t have to be complicated to work well.

Shower with the birds and bees watching 🐦 🐝
After a day by the coast, walking, or riding, stepping into a hot shower under the open sky feels unreal. It’s quiet, it’s simple, and it gives you a moment to properly switch off.

Being totally off-grid means you stay connected to what’s around you — and the shower is one of those small details that makes the whole experience. No rushing, no distractions… just fresh air, warm water, and a chance to reset.
