In 1906, horse-drawn carriages were pulling up outside this very door 🐻
The photograph shows the Bear and Castle Hotel on Marlborough High Street more than a century ago - carriages waiting at the kerb, pedestrians in period dress, and the same arched entrance our guests still walk through today.
Our story began in 1757. The building you see now was rebuilt in 1889 in its striking Jacobean-Georgian style, and for years it served Weymouth Ales to travellers making the journey between London and Bath.
Nearly 270 years later, we're still here.
The ales have changed, the rooms have been refurbished, and live music now fills the walls most weeks - but the character of the place remains exactly where it has always been.
Next time you step inside for a pint, pause for a moment as you're walking in some very old footsteps 🍺
