History in Wirksworth πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

The charming market town of Wirksworth in Derbyshire is home to a rich array of unique and ancient structures. Among these, a particularly notable feature is a solitary wall, which is all that remains of a medieval cottage dating back to the 1400s.

Cruck construction is characterised by long, often naturally curved, timber beams that slant inward, converging to form the roof's ridge. These beams are anchored together by a horizontal beam, creating a prominent "A" shape.

This solitary wall was uncovered in 1971 during the demolition of two adjoining cottages that previously occupied the site. It now forms the external wall of the Wirksworth Brewery building.

Interestingly, cruck cottages are not uncommon in Derbyshire and Leicestershire. Their distinctive architectural style makes them relatively easy to identify in older houses in the region.
