Midford Castle is a grade one Grade I listed folly castle. Designed by John Carter and built for Henry Roebuck in 1775. The castle is built on a trefoil (triangular) plan with the three towers conjoined in a gothic style. The floor plan resembles the "clubs" suit on playing cards. It was believed that the "club" design was linked to gambling. According to local folklore the money used to build the castle was won with the Ace of Clubs in a card game.
However the grand entrance or โstalkโ of the Ace of Clubs was actually added some 40 years later by the Conolly family of Castletown, Co Kildare, who also built the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and outbuildings.
The Conollys sold in 1901 and Midford Castle slowly fell into disrepair, changing hands a few more times over the century.
Scott Adams, whose business Nutrisport (est1988) is in wellness, fitness and sports nutrition bought Midford Castle from Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage in 2009. Fifty years of unsympathetic restoration, poor heating and bodged repairs with unsuitable non-traditional materials had taken its toll on the buildings and fixtures which were crumbling and leaking from top to bottom. Heating and power is now sourced from sustainable, carbon neutral Biomass and Solar.
Sympathetic restoration of the Castle and Estate using traditional techniques, materials and expert craftsmanship is now largely complete. The Castle has been home to Scott and his 7 children, the Nutrisport Trust (educational charity), and more recently for 3 refugee families from Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The Stables, Priests accommodation, Chapel, Orangery, Coach House and Castle Vaults form part of the Wellness resort with luxury accommodation can be used for retreats, conferences, weddings and parties.
Midford Castle is the home of Bath Callisthenics and runs outdoor exercise/flexibility classes on Wednesday evenings and by arrangement.
The Bath Two Tunnels cycle path (part of the National Cycle Network) is just below the castle, you can exercise in our Callisthenics park/ Yoga deck, stroll around the 50 acre estate, or just relax in a hot tub overlooking the Midford Valley.
