After a very busy month, this remains one of the highlights! It was great fun to have hosted our first two day riding holiday from Emmetts Grange.

Day one involved a ride to Tarr Farm for lunch using different routes to get to and from Tarr Steps whilst day two consisted of a ride across the Exmoor Forest to a picnic at Dry Bridges with a route back via Simonsbath.

I thoroughly enjoyed hosting this gang who were such great company. It was wonderful to be able to share a passion and knowledge of Exmoor.

dm or email the emmetts team for more info on riding holidays or guided day rides on the moor from Emmetts Grange.

Sound on! 🔉

This morning I was rudely awoken by a particularly noisy cuckoo which I could hear from my bedroom window. curiously, I quietly stalked down the hedge line (so not to spook or disturb this bird) to see how close I could get. Astonishingly, I managed to get to a point where I was directly beneath it to film it calling. I wonder if you can see him in the video above…

After spending a winter in Africa, these birds migrate back to Europe and in England, we associate the male bird call with spring and the beginning of summer. At Emmetts Grange we are lucky enough to have an abundance of them and you will hear them calling all through the day.

A little more on Donald Comer-Calder who is featuring in our next Food Curiosity night on 9th May…

Currently immersed in the highest echelons of British Michelin Star (two!) London restaurants, he is steaming ahead with his own development as a Chef. The menu he’s cooking weaves his love of European food with the best ingredients of Devon spring. The following is a brief description about Donald from Donald;

“Growing up on a farm on Dartmoor, Donald knows and loves Devon produce and all that the seasons bring down here.
Time spent in France has sparked a lifelong love of European food, leading to stints cooking in the Basque Country and the Mediterranean”

Don’t miss what promises to be one of the most memorable Food Curiosity Events 🤩

It is a real novelty and great use of resources to be able to capitalise on renewable energy within the Exmoor National Park.
At Emmetts Grange we have a Proven wind turbine (WT15000) with a capacity of 12.1 kWh Which was installed in 2011. This wind turbine has been out of action for nearly 2 years and was supposedly deemed not viable to repair the turbine due to the extensive works needed to keep the turbine running. However, after a lot of research and careful planning a decision has been made to lower the turbine, inspect the damage and put this theory to the test. Luckily in this case, it looks as though only minimal repairs were necessary and we should see the turbine back up and running within two weeks.
Given the current global crisis of power and energy this surely has to remain a fundamental part of our future.
