Day Camp at Emmetts on Exmoor
Sunday, November 22nd 2026

Join us for a Day Camp focusing on Rider Performance and Wellbeing. A full experience to help you develop your dressage and become more in-tune with your horse.

Two instructed sessions on the day:

One individual Rider Mindset and Biomechanics Session with Colleen Hoekstra Knox - evaluating how you are influencing your horse and making small adjustments to maximise your correctness and communication.

Colleen is a Dressage and Horsemanship instructor with over 30 years of experience training horses and riders from grassroots to FEI levels, and solving wider behavioral issues. She has extensively studied rider psychology and biomechanics, having trained with Biomechanics pioneers J Ashton Moore and Hilary Clayton. She also employs classical principles to help riders enhance their horses’ work in a calm, quiet and practical way.

One individual body assessment with Miranda Taylor. Miranda will give you off-horse exercises and a bespoke yoga routine to take home and enhance your ridden work and general health and well-being.

Miranda brings a wealth of experience in health, movement, and restorative practices, combining yoga, breathwork, nervous system regulation, sleep management, and therapeutic bodywork to create deeply personalised experiences.

You’ll leave the day with a new outlook, a calm reset, and a comprehensive plan for your training both on and off your horse!

Optional Guided Hack across the Moor available AM or PM

Meet and Greet Breakfast 8:00-9:00am - Bacon and Egg Sandwiches, yogurt and fruit from Emmett’s amazing kitchen with locally sourced pork and eggs.

Gourmet Lunch with an off-horse Rider Biomechanics Talk and fun interactive activities with Colleen Knox

Relax throughout the day on comfy couches by the huge word burner in the beautiful Threshing Barn with Tea, Coffee and Biscuits available.

Day Stable included (overnight stabling on Saturday available.
Overnight accommodation and hook up also available for a fee).

**Dartmoor pony talk and two course meal - 19th September 7pm**

Join us for a talk in Barlows barn given by Freya Thompson on the Dartmoor pony breed, Salcombe stud and recent controversial discussions on the management of ponies on the moor. This will be followed by Exmoor slow roasted shoulder of lamb shepherds pie, kale, Emmetts garden runner beans and white chocolate cheesecake.

Yesterday was a very special day when I was able to give Julia Brown (aged 91) a tour of her old home, Emmetts Grange.

Julia and her husband, Josh moved to Emmetts Grange in 1969 and lived here for 25 years until 1994. During this time they ran a diverse business which consisted of bed and breakfast in the main house, self catered holiday lets in the cottages on the driveway, a substantial farming enterprise of 1000 sheep, worked by two collie dogs. In addition to this they also ran a yard full of racehorses in the courtyard.

It was fascinating to hear the anecdotes of her time at Emmetts which gave an insight in to the busy lives they led here, running the business and playing a part in the community, all whilst raising three children as well. Life on Exmoor during 70s and 80s was very different to civilisation on the moor as we know it now. Daily activities would often include running a diesel generator to power the farm (before mains electricity), milking a jersey cow and using a horse to check livestock (before quadbikes).
I particularly enjoyed hearing about how the threshing mechanism in the function barn was used to run a belt driven shearing machine in the summer months. Today this building is used as our pop up restaurant and wedding venue!

It was such a pleasure to see such enthusiasm and passion for somewhere that clearly still remains very close to her heart and whilst she has left Emmetts it was clear that the happy memories of Emmetts hadn’t left her.

Out with the old and in with the new!

The maintenance of a 200 year old building can sometimes seem relentless but occasionally quite rewarding. Thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of awlwood joinery we now have a new library bay window.
