Did you know about our resident ghost?

Day 2 🎃 The Ghost of Dunster Station 👻
There are few places more atmospheric than an old railway station after dark…

And tucked away on the West Somerset Railway, just outside the medieval village of Dunster, is a station with a particularly chilling tale.

Dunster Station dates back to the Victorian era, having originally opened in July 1874. But it isn't just its history that makes this place fascinating. Opposite the platform stands the old Grade II listed goods shed - and according to local railway folklore, something rather unsettling may still linger there.

It is said that a railway driver was killed in an accident inside the shed.

Over the years, reports have emerged of a dark, shadowy figure appearing around the goods shed. Those who have encountered the apparition have described an unsettling presence - a fleeting figure that seems to appear from nowhere, before disappearing again.

Whilst there have been no deaths officially reported at the Dunster goods shed, it has been reported in a news article that a railway worker lost their foot in an accident at the goods shed in 1941. The goods shed now acts as a workshop for the railway's engineering team.

With a convenient gap in the diary, it’s all hands on deck for some much needed maintenance to the exterior of the hut, finishing with a fresh lick of paint before the winter rolls in.

We’ll be abiding by this advice for the time being. NO fire pit NO bbq. Thank you for understanding 🙏🚂

Although the has ended for now, we are still under a VERY HIGH wildfire risk. With tinder dry conditions and a small breeze, any small fires can develop quickly. In recent days we have seen bonfires leading to developing fires. Please don't light bonfires during this continuing dry spell, the embers from these can rise up into the air and land on tinder dry ground igniting the surrounding area in seconds.

No BBQs, No camping fires, and take your glass bottles home!
