🏡 We’re often asked the history of The Old Mill - Every old building has a story…..The Old Mill has quite a few!

After researching Welsh historical archives, we’ve traced the remarkable history of The Old Mill and created a new information board on-site to help preserve and share its story.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about the places you visit, we hope you’ll take a few moments to explore the fascinating past that helped shape The Old Mill we know today.

📖 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Just a 5-minute read—but well worth it. ❤️ *The Old Mill, Melin Y Wern* (*Mill-On-The-Alder-Marsh)

‘A Place Where History Meets the Night Sky’

Nestled in the peaceful hills of North Wales, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Old Mill carries a remarkable story that reaches far beyond the valley.

The mill was built in the 19th century (1886) by John Jones of Wern Mill, a renowned Welsh astronomer and mathematician. Known for his natural scientific talent, Jones contributed to important mathematical and astronomical publications and was once involved in compiling nautical almanacs for the British Government. After leaving the army, he settled here in Melin Y Wern where he established and successfully ran the corn mill that still stands today.

Today, The Old Mill Holiday Cottages enable visitors to stay within this unique piece of Welsh heritage — a place where science, rural industry and landscape meet.

✨ As night falls, the story comes full circle. Far from city lights, the skies above The Old Mill reveal the same constellations that once inspired its founder. 💫

Reconnect with history.
Relax beneath the stars.

💡📍 A new recommendation for guests and locals to enjoy! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️

We recently tried out the newly refurbished Brookhouse Mill, just outside of Denbigh on the A525 towards Ruthin.

😅You know we’ve got a soft spot for Old Mills! And we weren’t disappointed! 🥰

It’s a beautiful location with river running alongside the pub and views of the open countryside.

It’s been very thoughtfully renovated to a high quality, retaining beautiful historic features, with loads of outdoor seating, and extremely spacious dining areas and plenty of cosy log fires ideal for the winter months.

🐶 Dog friendly ✅
Open daily ✅

We highly recommend and wish the team there loads of success ❤️
