An Update on Church Street, Monmouth - Historic Old Town & A Huge Thank You

We want to start by saying a massive thank you to everyone who has recently reached out and offered to help us in so many different ways regarding our continued distruption on Church Street. We truly, deeply appreciate every single one of you. ❤️

Times are ridiculously tough at the moment. It feels like everything is constantly stacked against us—if it isn’t one thing, it’s another. But we are determined to do whatever we can to get through this..

Yesterday’s Meeting: -

Yesterday, we had a meeting with local traders, residents, Monmouthshire County Council, the Town Council, Senedd members, and Heritage & Development representatives.

• The Good News: We finally got answers to some questions we desperately needed addressing.

• The Reality: Unfortunately, the main takeaway is that nothing is going to happen quickly. The issues we are facing are going to take a very long time to resolve.

We are just hoping we can manage to scrape through in the meantime. We genuinely worry that by the time help or solutions arrive, it will be a case of too little, too late—not just for us, but for a lot of other businesses on Church Street too.

Despite the uncertainty, and on top of all the other added stresses currently being slammed onto the UK hospitality sector, we are determined to try and make the best of yet another bad situation...

It is a real shame that the government cannot see the severe damage being caused to high streets, pubs and restaurants like ours by their decisions.

Lets be honest, quite frankly, our government do not deserve the independent businesses of this country.

Thank you all for standing by us. Please keep supporting local, supporting Church Street, and helping us keep the doors open.

Ben, Kenny & the Creates Monmouth Team.

We are so deeply saddened to hear that our colleague and friend, Callum, has passed away.. this was not the news every single one of us was praying for..

Although he hadn't worked with us for long, Callum made a lasting impression on all of us.❤️

He was an absolute pleasure to work alongside—always bringing the kindest energy and a gentle soul to the team, with such endless talent 🌟.

He quickly became much more than a colleague, he became a true friend to us all! You were one of the good ones Callum.

Please keep Callum's family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace our friend. 🕊️

Thank you, Church Street community!

A huge thank you to all the residents, traders, and supporters of Church Street who attended our meeting yesterday evening.

We had a great turnout, and it’s incredibly reassuring to see that we are all on the same page regarding the future of our street, and surrounding areas.

We would also like to extend a personal thank you to everyone who supports our Church Street businesses—not just this past week, but every week.

As we mentioned last night, our goal isn't to be negative. We simply want to be completely transparent about the ongoing struggles and challenges we are all facing time and time again. We just want answers and communication.

We are committed to keeping you updated as things progress. We have another upcoming meeting that will hopefully clear up a lot of issues.

Let’s work together to get Monmouth back to being the lovely, quaint town it truly deserves to be!

We will do all we possibly can!

To our wonderful Monmouth community and fellow independent businesses,

We feel it’s time to be completely transparent about what’s going on behind the scenes on Church Street.

Recently, it’s come to our attention that our vocal stance on the ongoing scaffolding and town maintenance issues has been misunderstood by some as being "unsympathetic" to local flood victims.
Hearing this is heartbreaking. During the floods, we worked tirelessly to support our community—opening extra hours, hosting give-back events, and donating 100% of those proceeds directly to flood victims without taking a penny for ourselves. We cared deeply then, and we care deeply now.

But here is the reality our independent businesses are facing,

The Knock-on Effect, While Church Street wasn't underwater, the floods caused a massive drop in footfall. Visitors avoided Monmouth, and local independents received zero financial support to recover.

Hospitality in Crisis, The hospitality sector here is severely struggling. Cafes, restaurants, and pubs rely heavily on a vibrant street scene, and the current situation is pushing businesses to the absolute brink.

The Scaffolding Stalemate, For months, the town has looked neglected. We’ve tried the "stay positive and quiet" approach, but it hasn't worked. Footfall is plummeting, and several local businesses are now selling up or choosing not to renew their leases. It is devastating to watch.

A Town Neglected, Monmouth is supposed to be the lead town of Monmouthshire. Yet, when you look at thriving neighbours like Abergavenny, Usk, or Ross-on-Wye, Monmouth is being left behind by the local councils. Visitors are arriving genuinely saddened by the state of our historic streets.

We love Monmouth. You know the immense personal effort we’ve put into making Church Street look beautiful over the years. But we are exhausted, angry, and hitting hurdle after hurdle with no council support.

We started making noise because polite emails were being completely ignored.

We aren't trying to be negative—we are fighting for the survival of Church Street.

Thank you to everyone who continues to stand by Monmouth's independent businesses.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW MORE THAN EVER. ❤️
