🤓

Did you know the name Inverness comes from the Scottish Gaelic “Inbhir Nis”, which means “Mouth of the River Ness” ?

The word “Ness”, which also gives its name to Loch Ness, is of Pictish origin, coming from the river goddess “Nessa”. Legend has it that that Dark Beira, mother of the gods, transformed Nessa into the River Ness. This was a punishment for running away from her duties, so she was forced to run forever in the water.

However, she broke free of the river, forming the waters of Loch Ness. It is said that every year, on the anniversary of her transformation, Nessa appears from the loch, singing a sad but beautiful song.

Interesting..🧐

There is so much to do and see when staying at Little Chestnut. Walk up to the Fyrish Monument.

Close up it is even more impressive than when seen from below - a huge structure of three central arches and four flanking towers. It was built in 1783 by Sir Hector Munro - the local laird. He had been commander of British Forces in India, and defeated the Dutch at the Siege of Negapatam. On his return to the Highlands the Clearances were underway and many people were starving. After the fashion of the time famine relief was provided only in return for work - it being feared that feeding the starving would make them lazy - and the construction of the monument was one of the tasks given to the local destitute. It is a replica of the gates of Negapatam, to enhance Munro's glory.

On a clear day, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Cromarty Sutors which mark the entrance to the Cromarty Firth.
