Teampall Mholuaidh (St Moluag’s Church) sits just off the road to the lighthouse in Ness, on the Isle of Lewis. It’s the only pre-Reformation church on the island that still stands with its roof intact.

Lewis and its outlying islands once had thirty seven such churches. The site was first consecrated in the sixth century, with the current church built by the Vikings between the 12th and 14th centuries. There are many similarities with the church at Rodel in Harris.

For centuries, Teampall Mholuaidh was known as a place to seek help for mental distress and the site was also known for a fertility festival, dedicated to the sea-god Shony.

Tràigh Shanndaidh beach in Ness on the Isle of Lewis is special. The Atlantic opens out in front of you. This is the day after a storm, after the sun has come out again.
