Come to the Motte Pop up pub on Saturday 2nd September and enjoy a bite to eat with your pint … 🍕 Pizzas, Pie and Peas available to order on the night . Andrew from The Smithy will be cooking for us in the hall kitchen and making everything fresh to order-look forward to seeing you all there.

To celebrate the Women's World Cup Final we thought we would give our roast pork a Spanish twist today. We've added a few olives to the roast and a glass or 2 of Spanish wine. There's roast beef as well, roasted just the way we always do it. Yorkshire puddings are already looking great.

Whoever you are cheering for let's hope it's a great game and the best team wins

Sadly we have to announce that the Smithy will close for this season when we finish at 5 o’clock on Sunday the 27th August.

The many problems facing the hospitality sector have been amplified for us as a small rural business.

Staff shortages are particularly difficult when you are in a sparsely populated area. Food price inflation with prices across our most used items going up order by order last year with some items now more than double in price compared to 2 years ago. Energy costs more than tripled with little choice on energy type and the costs of upgrading old buildings prohibitive. Other overheads such as insurance have doubled.

All of this at a time when our customers are having to be careful with their money. Hospitality sales generate small margins and profitability is only achieved through a good volume of customers, unfortunately last year and this year there were too many days/weeks when these volumes were simply not there. It is regretfully not sustainable to carry on.

With all of the above in mind we will now take some time to consider what our best options are for ourselves and The Smithy.

Both myself and Margaret want to say a heartfelt thank you to the customers, suppliers and particularly staff that it has been a pleasure to work with over the last 6 years. We will miss you but we are not going anywhere soon so if you are passing please knock on the door and say hello, the kettle is usually on.

Hip hip hooray. When we open tomorrow you will be able to order wine or beer. 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍻 🍺

From Friday the 14th July we have been granted an occasional licence to serve alcohol. There will be wine by the glass or bottle including a lovely strawberry fizz that will be perfect for when the sun is shining. Also a selection of beer.

Saw these beautiful tomatoes in Mitchells of Castle Douglas earlier today and couldn't resist putting bruschetta on as a starter tonight.

Oh and there is pork goulash on tonight as well but when it's gone it's gone.

We are looking to fill a couple of positions here at The Smithy.

Kitchen assistant (part time) - helping to ensure that the kitchen and front of house areas are kept clean, tidy and organised this position would be ideal for someone looking for a first job. Working flexible hours on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday day time you will be fully supported by our existing friendly team and full training will be given. So if you are looking for a way to start earning your own money then give us a call.

Front of house (occasional hours) we are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person to help cover busy periods and the absence of other team members during our opening hours of Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday day time. Dealing directly with customers you would meet and greet, take orders and deliver food and drink.

Pay for both positions would depend on age and experience.
