Seal pupping season 🦭
Grey Seals can be seen at sea and along the coast of Wales all year round. Between August and November each year they come ashore to give birth and raise their pups. Female seals – cows- give birth to white, fluffy seal pups on beaches along our coast.
You might spot seal pups alone on Welsh beaches.
This isn’t unusual and doesn’t mean the pup has been abandoned. The mothers return to the sea for short foraging trips, but will keep an eye on their pup and return regularly to feed them.
Responsible seal watching is critical to keep them safe. ⬇️
- Keep your distance. Watch seals from at least 100m away. Seals can be spotted from the Coast Path with binoculars, to enjoy but not disturb them.
- Keep all dogs on a lead and away from seals.
- Do not make loud noises or fast movements that might disturb or frighten them, eg. running nearby.
- Move on after 10 minutes of watching.
- Do not get between the adult seal and their pup. Females often rest in the water just offshore from their pup.
- Never chase them into the water.
