Does anyone else get frustrated when holiday cottage websites advertise properties as “accessible” — only to discover they’re anything but?

It’s not just misleading. It creates huge stress and disappointment for wheelchair users and disabled guests who rely on accurate information when booking a break.

What’s even more frustrating is that it undermines those of us who genuinely understand accessibility and work incredibly hard to provide a truly stress-free experience for guests with mobility needs.

I’ve just searched several well-known holiday letting agent websites using their “accessible” filters, and the results included properties with:

• Thick loose gravel driveways
• Steps up to the front door
• Narrow standard doorways
• Carpeted living areas and bedrooms
• Tiny bathrooms with no realistic access to the shower
• Standard non-profile beds

And unbelievably, one property described as “accessible” had a downstairs bedroom… but the bathroom was upstairs. Seriously… who is checking this stuff?

Accessibility is not just about ticking a box or adding a grab rail. Getting this wrong can completely ruin a holiday before it’s even started.

Surely these companies should know better than to market properties as accessible when they are clearly not fit for purpose?

Does anyone else share this frustration? I’d genuinely love to hear your experiences in the comments.

We’re incredibly thankful for specialist family-run platforms like that really do understand accessible needs and provide information people can actually trust.

We’re trying something new at Heddwch Retreat and would really value your thoughts.

For our current guest staying in Heddwch, we’re trialling a shower trolley in the en-suite wetroom to explore how this might work for future guests. Ideally, we’d love a little more space, but feedback so far from guests using it has been really positive.

We’d love to hear from anyone in this group who has experience using shower trolleys — either as a guest, carer or family member. Are there any tips, ideas or small details that help make the experience easier, safer or more comfortable?

We’ve added photos showing the current layout and setup. This is a learning process for us and we’re really keen to get it right, so any thoughts or suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you in advance — we’re really looking forward to hearing your experiences. Gary
