๐๏ธ Liddesdale Heritage Centre
๐ฎ Postcode: TD9 0QG
Once a valley marked by border raids and warfare โ๏ธ, Liddesdale holds a rich and diverse history that goes far beyond its Reiver past. A visit to the Liddesdale Heritage Centre offers a journey through time - from the days of raiding to the rise of the railway ๐, textile industry ๐งต, farming ๐, and forestry ๐ฒ.
๐ Located in Newcastleton, a planned village founded in 1793 as a weaving centre, the Heritage Centre was established in 1985 by the Liddesdale Heritage Association. Itโs housed in a former Congregational Church โช, adding to its charm and character.
๐ Visitors can explore fascinating census and tombstone records ๐, along with historical artefacts from the old Waverley railway line, which once connected Carlisle, Newcastleton, and Edinburgh ๐.
๐งต A stunning bi-centenary tapestry beautifully illustrates 200 years of life in this Scottish Borders village - a true visual celebration of local heritage.
๐ฐ The Elliot Clan, one of the most notable names in the region, has its own dedicated display, featuring a model of an Elliot tower and the famous bright blue Elliot tartan, designed by a countess to match the colour of her eyes ๐๐. Today, the Elliot Chief resides at Redheugh, near Newcastleton.
