If you're picturing a long road trip, you might be in for a surprise. 🚗 👇

That's less time than some people spend doomscrolling for somewhere to actually visit at the weekend.

Who fancies heading underground to escape this July summer heat?

The Forest of Dean has two of the most genuinely fascinating underground experiences in the country.

🪨 Clearwell Caves drops you 100 feet beneath the forest floor into a natural cave system mined for iron ore and ochre for over 4,500 years. Ten self-guided caverns, naturally nice and cool, and with more history in the walls than most museums manage above ground.

⛏️ Hopewell Colliery is something else entirely. A real, working coal mine where guided tours are led by a local Freeminer, a right unique to the Forest of Dean, dating back to the reign of Edward I. You come out the other side through the forest, which makes for a quietly memorable hour underground.

🎨 farOpen Art Trail (4th to 12th July). The region's biggest celebration of local art returns, with 127 artists opening 55 studios all around the Forest of Dean. What’s even better is that entry is 100% FREE to every single venue. farOpen Art Trail and Events

🌽 Elton Giant Mazes reopens (opening on the 18th July). The maize mazes are back for summer with a new space theme! Suitable for all ages, pushchairs and powered wheelchairs, with a cabin café and picnic courtyard on site. Elton Giant Mazes

🚵 FOD Thursday Timed Bike Runs (next run Thursday 9th July, from 4pm). These friendly downhill timed runs are great for any MTB enthusiasts, set on the gravity trails at the Forest of Dean cycle centre. Head to Pedalabikeaway for more details…

🌲 Summer Holidays at Dean Heritage Centre (from 18th July). FREE entry to the whole site through the summer break! Five galleries of Forest history, themed Explorer Trail sheets, a daily craft hut, an adventure play area and the Gruffalo Trail winding through the woodland paths.
