First camp of the season and the ocean delivered 🌊

Good crew, fun waves, and an epic swell building into the Easter weekend.

Long sessions, salty skin, tired arms, and a few cold beers after.

Spring at Base Surf Lodge has officially begun.

A few spaces left if you want to be here for it.

Salt in the air, boards under our feet, and some of the most breathtaking coastline in the UK as our classroom 🌊

We don’t take it for granted how lucky we are here on the North Coast of Cornwall — rugged cliffs, endless horizons, and waves that keep us coming back for more. Every lesson at Base Surf Lodge comes with a view you’ll never forget.

Always grateful to call this our everyday, and to share it with everyone who comes down to surf with us 🌊

When .salamvmt joined the Base Surf Lodge team last year, we didn’t just find another surf coach — we found someone as obsessed with the craft as we are. 🌊

The hours we spend talking about surf coaching between the three of us are endless. Challenging each other’s ideas and questioning what really works for one surfer and what doesn’t for another.

Most walks to the beach or post-lesson coffees are spent breaking down the nuances — from the take-off to the cutback. Exploring how to help people truly understand the ocean when they don’t have daily access to it, and diving into the best mobility and strength protocols to support surfers who spend more time on land than in the water.

We are as in love with the process of coaching as our guests are with surfing!

Stoked to share the lineup, the conversations, and the process with you, Jack 🌊

From white water to your first green waves 🌊

There’s nothing like the moment it all comes together. At Base Surf Lodge, our coaching is designed to give you the time, knowledge, and confidence to make that transition.

We focus on:
• How to position yourself correctly in the ocean to allow you to catch waves.
• The paddle techniques needed to get early entry into your first green waves
• White water regression drills to build true board control that is transferable to green wave surfing
• How to identify the shape of waves so you can adjust you take off correctly both backhand and frontside
• Developing the fundamentals that set you up for real progression in your surfing journey

Because surfing green waves isn’t just about catching them — it’s about understanding them

Another stunning surf camp complete.

Beautiful people. Glorious weather. Fun waves. Good times!

This camp we had a whole group take over the lodge, who have been coming for 5 years! It’s so much fun for us to see friendly faces again and again, as the whole camp feels like we’re on holiday with good friends.

Today’s Topic: Angled Take-Off

What is it?
- Angling your board, whilst catching an unexpected unbroken (green) wave.

What are the benefits?
- Gives you more time to get to your feet.
- Reduces the need for panic popping-up or grabbing rail.
- Maximises efficiency and smoothness of your take-off.
- Sets you up nicely for the rest of the wave, with speed and control.

What does it require?
- Noticing what part of the wave you are trying to take-off on (peak or shoulder) and reading how steep the wave is to know how much angle is optimal.

What can go wrong?
- Too much angle and you could miss the wave completely, come off the back of the wave or get flipped sideways, depending how steep it is.
- Not enough angle and you could nose dive or slide down to the bottom of the wave, lose all your speed and let the wave run away from you.

Best tips for getting the angle right?
- Watch the wave!!
- Watch the wave coming towards you.
- Watch the wave growing down the line.
- Watch the wave sucking up beneath you.

Because most mistakes happen when the focus drifts from the wave to your own body.

When you’re not surfing, what are your favourite things to do on a surf camp?

Eat?

Chill?

Hike?

Swim?

Nap?

In our free time we love to go fishing, maybe because it keeps us connected to all the things we love about surfing:

- Being out in the elements in nature.
- Connecting with the moon and tides.
- Exploring new spots of coastline.
- Practicing patience and managing expectations.
- Adapting to the wind and weather.
-

Surfing and fishing actually have many similarities:

- We have to be conscious of the tides.
- They take us to new spots around the coast.
- Plans change according to the wind.
- We have to manage our own expectations.
- They both teach us to enjoy the process and focus less on the outcome.
-
- It teaches us patience.

This is Base Surf Lodge. This is our home.

For those of you yet to come stay with us, here’s a little peak inside the lodge.

We have 4 guest bedrooms with a max of 10 guests. Two rooms have a beautiful sunset view over fistral, one of the rooms is a bright and beachy double bedroom and the other is a spacious bunk room for friends, families or solo travellers.

We have created a natural feel Movement Room on the ground floor, as a space for you to relax and unwind or practice your surfing skills with balance boards, yoga mats, hanging bars, massage balls and more.

The whole bottom level is a modern and spacious open plan living/dining area. This lovely space brings everyone together from breakfast time, through to the evening BBQ and is the perfect place to pop the kettle on after a surf and chill with a book or play some games.

The private garden is serene and tropical with its giant palms and super comfy sofas. The Mediterranean style BBQ and giant herb garden add to the holiday vibes. While the surf school is conveniently in-house with an outdoor shower and board rack for all day easy access to the equipment.

We are setup perfectly for surf camps, with two different beaches both walking distance and everything else you’ll need is right on our doorstep.

So come join us, Rob and Lou, in our small and friendly surf camp with a lovely homely vibe and superb personalised coaching.

Have you ever thought about all the possible places you can surf in the UK?

We are so lucky to live on an island, surrounded by beautiful beaches on all corners of our coastline. The UK might not be world famous for its surf and you might even get strange looks for getting into a wetsuit in some places, but we actually have so many incredible surf destinations right here, without having to jump on a plane!

If this is something that excites you and you’re keen to explore new surf spots around our coast, Rob and Lou will be around everyday of your camp to get you pumped for exploring and surfing our British coastline.

Because exploration is what surfing is all about!!
