Today marks 100 years since the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall to the Great Western Hotel on 20th May 1926 〓〓 🇬🇧

During his tour of Cornwall, he visited the hotel to take tea alongside Sir Walter Peacock, Secretary of the Duchy of Cornwall and the Duchy stewards, Mr. Alexander Webster and Mr. Thomas Stainer. Several invited guests were also present, including local clergymen, councillors, architects and county officials.

The photo was taken outside the hotel where the party was admiring the wonderful sea views. The Prince also signed the hotel register during his visit, which is proudly displayed in the hotel foyer alongside a framed photograph. (The Prince is seated fourth from the left in the photograph)

The Prince, who later became King Edward VIII, had visited Newquay on several previous occasions sometimes accompanied by his brother, Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI. They often travelled to Cornwall for health reasons, seeking rest and quiet by the sea.

Many thanks to William for sharing the history behind this special visit!
