Good morning and happy Thursday! 🌥
Today is a special day for Helston, as it marks the celebration of Flora Day. Every year on 8th May, this charming town in West Cornwall comes alive with vibrant festivities that continue throughout the day. This ancient festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the longer, lighter days, drawing visitors from around the world to experience its rich traditions. 💐
Flora Day is best known for its four key dances:
💃 7:00 AM – Early Morning Dance: The day begins with this traditional dance, where couples dressed in summer attire promenade through the streets, entering homes and shops adorned with greenery and flowers. The Helston Town Band leads the way, playing the iconic Flora Dance tune, passed down through generations without a written score.
🕺9:50 AM – Children's Dance: Over 1,200 local schoolchildren, dressed in white with floral headdresses or school ties, fill the streets with youthful energy and pride during this joyful procession.
💃 12:00 PM – Midday Dance: The grandest dance of the day features participants in formal dress—men in top hats and tails, and women in their finest gowns.
🕺 5:00 PM – Evening Dance: The final dance mirrors the Early Morning Dance, rounding off the day’s festivities with elegance and enthusiasm.
But the dances aren’t the only highlight. Another beloved tradition is the Hal-an-Tow pageant, a lively theatrical performance that tells the story of Helston’s history through song, dance, and costumed characters.
Throughout the day, participants wear lily of the valley the symbolic flower of Flora Day. The town is also beautifully adorned with greenery and floral displays. Local markets, music, and a strong sense of community pride add to the charm and excitement. 🌼
Flora Day is more than a festival, it’s a heartfelt celebration of community, heritage, and the enduring spirit of Helston. Whether you're a local or visiting for the first time, it offers a unique glimpse into Cornwall's rich culture. ✨

Good morning and happy first day of May! 💐

All over the world there will be May day celebrations taking place today, and Cornwall is no different.
The most famous May day celebration in Cornwall is the Obby Oss festival which takes place in Padstow which is a costal town in north Cornwall.
Oss day celebrations start at midnight on the 30th of April. Locals gather by the Golden Lion Inn and sing the night song. They spend the night decorating the town and the May pole with plants and flowers. During the morning of May day the Obby Osses will appear which are two males from the town dressed in a hobby horse costume. Two marches then take place, they are circuits that take 12 hours to complete and both start at either side of the town. Following the hobby horses are locals playing instruments and singing the morning song. Only those who have lived in Lowenac (a place in Padstow) for at least two generations are allowed to take place in the marches but anyone can be a bystander. In the evening the two Osses meet at the May pole and then return to the stable. The townspeople will then sing of the Obby Osses death until they are resurrected on the following May eve. The earliest mention of the Obby Oss festival is from 1803, but there is documented evidence that the tradition might go back to the 16th century. To this day the Obby Oss festival is a very popular attraction with thousands of locals and tourists attending every year.

Over the weekend, we welcomed some buzzing new residents to Rosewyn! 🐝
Our new inhabitants have settled into their home nicely, and we couldn't be more excited!
To celebrate, here are a few facts about bees:
🌼 A single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers in a single day!
🍽 Bees are responsible for pollinating around 1/3 of the world’s food supply.
🐝 There are over 20,000 different species of bees around the world!
🌍 Bees are found on every continent except Antarctica!
👑 A queen bee can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day during peak season.
🕺 Bees communicate with each other by performing the "waggle dance" to share the location of food sources.
🧭 Bees can fly up to 15 miles per hour and have excellent navigation skills.
🍯 It takes about 12 bees their entire lifetime to make just one teaspoon of honey!
💧 Bees can drink nectar directly from flowers, or they can collect it in their "honey stomach" to take back to the hive.

We’re so grateful for these hardworking little creatures and can’t wait to see them thrive here. ✨

When many think of Cornwall, their minds may wander to its stunning coastline, golden sands, and inviting waters that draw thousands of visitors each year. Just a little further inland, however, lies another lesser-known type of beauty that offers a different kind of magic, Bodmin Moor. Located in East Cornwall, Bodmin Moor spans over 80 square miles of wild, untamed landscape. This vast expanse of moorland is not only a haven for nature lovers but also steeped in thousands of years of history and folklore (think the Beast of Bodmin Moor). 🐾
There is plenty to see at Bodmin Moor, and if you love adventure, this is a must-visit. 🌄
Discover the Cheesewring, a fascinating natural rock formation made up of large granite slabs stacked in a unique way that resembles a pile of cheese rounds! It’s a place of legend, with stories saying it was formed by giants! 🧀
Bodmin Moor is also home to the ancient Tregeseal Stone Circle, a prehistoric monument dating back over 4,000 years, thought to be part of an early Celtic ritual site. 🪨
Another historical landmark, the Bodmin Beacon, is an old signal tower that stands as a reminder of times when fires were lit atop the hills to warn of danger or communicate messages across the land. 🔥
Make sure not to miss the towering granite tors of Roughtor and Brown W***y, the highest points on the moor, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles. At their summits, on a clear day, you may be able to see from Looe to Tintagel. ⛰
Rich with mining heritage, you will come across many remnants of old tin and copper mines, such as Wheal Prosper Mine. ⛏
Whether you're hiking, exploring historical landmarks, or simply soaking in the peaceful, rugged surroundings, Bodmin Moor offers a serene escape unlike any other, a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical wonder! ✨
