“She’s quite quirky, where she’s…water obsessed. So, any body of water, whether it’s a muddy puddle, a stream, the sea – she just lays in it. She doesn’t really do anything. People often walk past and say, oh, what’s she doing? And no one really knows apart from Mango.”

“High tide to low tide, there’s so much to explore.”

As part of each beach takeover we’re talking to all kinds of coastal creators on how they see the beach. talked to us about the shifting and unspoilt nature of the Porthcothan coastline that keeps him coming back with his paints and canvas, from the seemingly modest stretch of sand at high tide to the landscape of large rocks, hidden caves, emerald rock pools and shallow waters that low tide reveals.

Coming from a long line of artists, Toby has carved out his own style capturing the ever-changing atmosphere of this coastline, on show at a gallery space in neighbouring Mawgan Porth. Check out more of his work on his profile.

Benches out front and the steady hum of a proper coffee machine inside, it’s as much a meeting place as a shop. We met up with Barney to find out more about this shop and café at the heart of Porthcothan Bay as part of this week’s beach takeover.
