Nestling below the majestic Haytor Rocks, The Rock Inn has been offering travellers a warm welcome, good food and shelter since its foundations as a coaching inn in the mid-eighteenth century. As a family-owned traditional country inn, we at the Rock Inn pride ourselves on providing a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and service with a personal touch to ensure a fulfilling a memorable experience to bo

The Inn has long been renowned for the standard if its food, holding one AA rosette for the last 20 years and recently being awarded 2 Rosettes for culinary excellence. We are fortunate that Devon’s rich supply of top-quality produce is right on our doorstep (including the South-West’s wonderful choice of cheese, and wine from local vineyards). Delivered daily to our chefs, food is skilfully prepared with emphasis placed on freshness, taste and seasonality. Nine very comfortable and well-appointed guests bedrooms await the weary traveller, each with bath or shower room en-suite, colour TV, direct-dial telephone, free wifi and beverage tray. Some are equipped with an interesting historical curio ‘mini bar’. All bedrooms are named after past Grand National winners – a tradition started in 1920.

We’ve been truly overwhelmed by the kindness and support shown following the passing of our proprietor, Christopher Graves.

Thank you to everyone who has sent messages, cards and flowers during this difficult time they have meant a great deal to us all.

The funeral will take place at Ilsington Church at 11am on Tuesday 26th May.

All who knew and loved Chris are welcome to attend the funeral service.

The Rock Inn will continue to operate as normal … however the inn will be closed to non-residents on 26th May while we pay our respects.

With great sadness we announce the passing of the proprietor and our ‘Master and Commander’ here at The Rock, Christopher Graves.

He died peacefully at home a few days ago, surrounded by his family.

Christopher has owned and cherished The Rock Inn since 1983 and poured his heart and soul into it for more than four decades. Alongside his wife Susan, he helped shape The Rock into a high-quality, food-led pub from the very early days, gaining our first AA Rosette way back in 1996.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, boss, mentor and friend, whose warmth, standards, humour and generosity left a lasting impression on so many people.

He will be deeply missed by all the team at The Rock, as well as by the wider Rock Inn community: suppliers, former colleagues, and the many loyal customers who came to know and appreciate him over the years.

While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life very well lived. ❤️🙏

🍷 **Red Wine of the Month**🍷
Nero D’Avola 2023, ‘Fresh AF’, Unico Zelo, Riverland, Australia
In our endless quest to source interesting wines for you all we’ve arrived in Riverland, South Australia this month. Here Unico Zelo is a boutique winery run by Brendan & Laura Carter who focus on Italian varieties that thrive in Australia’s hot arid regions. They practice low-intervention methods and work sustainably. Here the Sicilian Nero D’Avola grape is blended with a touch of Zibibbo (another Sicilian grape) and Granache, all handled carefully and making a light to medium-bodied fruity wine brimming with sun. Expect ripe plums, baked wild blueberries and red fruits mixed with supple leather and floral notes of lavender with refreshing acidity.
This is great for the spring season food and for those that like Pinot Noir/Beaujolais and the lighter wines from Puglia.. come in and give it a try 🍷 🍷 🍷
