A small delegation (3) from the Johnny McNeill Lodge were pleased to visit the Flower of Scotland Lodge in Rosyth on Sunday 15th March to witness the Initiation of an unlightened gentleman into the Order. The ceremony was ably carried out by Mr Calum Miller's father, Bro Keith Miller ROH HM with 15 in the link.

There would have been more of our Lodge numbers at this ceremony but unfortunately it clashed with Mothers' Day and, in the interests of self-preservation, many Brethren decided to spend the day with their wives.

We send our heartfelt congratulations to Bro Calum and look forward to meeting him again in the near future.

The Brethren of the Johnny McNeill Lodge 10377 were extremely pleased to welcome the Nicolson family, who we have been assisting for the past 6 years, to our Lodge on 26th Jan 2026 whilst we were in open order.

Having two young children already, Ellie – now 9yo and Callum now 13yo (who is also a registered young carer), Brian and Amanda were blessed with the arrival of a baby girl early in 2019. Unfortunately, she (Ava – now 6yo) was born with all of her internal organs outside of her body (Gastroschisis) which was further compounded by other serious conditions including a 14.5cm hole in her stomach. The expected survival rate for babies born with this condition is generally quite good but in Ava’s case this was greatly reduced due to the complications and her future looked extremely bleak.

All of this meant that she had to undergo numerous surgeries at the Sick Children's Hospital in Edinburgh who, having never dealt with this level of severity, were in constant communications with a hospital in Boston, USA who had experience with this level of complexity on 2 previous occasions - such is the rarity of Ava’s conditions.

During this very worrying time, both of the parents had to work full time jobs but one of them in turn spent the night at the hospital to be on hand as Ava went through many distressing operations. This is where the Johnny McNeill Lodge stepped in to assist with the inherent costs to the family.

I am happy to say that Ava was able to leave hospital in October 2019 (pictured here with Bro Eddie Irvine ROH). Since that time Ava has had many long and painful surgeries and at the age of 6yo still has more to come. The family have shown the most extraordinary strength and resilience in the manner in which they have coped with this distressing situation and I am also extremely pleased to report that they are now proud parents of Daniel who (after complications) was born in October 2025 by C-Section and weighed in at 5lbs 3oz – both mother and baby Daniel are doing well.
Whilst we have started to raise funds in order to send this family to Cyprus under the Cyprus Province’s HOALT programme, we are now planning other fund-raising events throughout 2026 to further bolster these funds and ensure that this worthiest of families truly have a “Holiday Of A Lifetime”.

What a fantastic afternoon we were afforded when we visited the Currock Lodge in Carlise for the Induction to the 2nd Degree of Bro Marc Scott. A 10am start from The Dean with the roads all clears of snow, ice & floods. True to what is now tradition, we emerged with numerous raffle prizes which will no doubt be put to good use. We are extremely grateful for the Currock lodge allowing us to auction our Paddington bear for HOALT which raised a superb £175 - Many thanks Carlisle and we look forward to visiting again.

Well, it doesn’t seem like yesterday that we were initiating Bro Stuart McRae into the Johnny McNeill Lodge 10377 – it was in fact on 14th July 2025 just days after his 18th birthday (oh! to be that young again). The ceremony was ably carried out by Stuart’s proud father, Bro Stuart McRae CP and the witnesses included Bro Kevin McRae CP (uncle) and many brethren of his Mother Lodge here in Newtongrange, Midlothian.
As all young men do at that age, Bro Stuart is no exception and has started to plan his future. To that end, he made an application to enlist into the Army (God Save the King!) and travelled to Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik to start the testing process. Having passed all but one of these arduous tests with flying colours, he was offered a 6-week course at Pirbright to which he jumped at the opportunity. Bro Stuart’s initial thoughts were to join the artillery but is now having other thoughts in that he may prefer the Intelligence Division and become a drone operator.
Once he passes the prep course, and we know he will, Bro Stuart will progress to his 6-month basic training. His Brothers in the Johnny McNeill Lodge and I am sure the whole of our Order wish him all the very best on this most noble of career paths serving his King and Country.

What a fantastic afternoon we were treated to when we visited the Flower of Scotland Lodge 10328 on 29th Nov 2025 for the Installation to KOM of Bro Bill Thomson. As always, we were afforded a most hearty welcome and the grazing was nothing short of superb as is ever the case.

We were kindly permitted to run a short auction of a Santa and Paddington bear in aid of our efforts to raise money for HOALT in Cyprus for a local family who are well deserving of a wee holiday. These hand-knitted items were kindly donated by the disabled sister of Bro Eddie Irvine ROH. The total raised including donations and bids was an impressive £228 and the 2 items were then donated back to the Johnny McNeill Lodge to raise more funds in the future.

Many thanks to all who supported this cause and our congratulations go to Bro Bill KOM and the Flower of Scotland Lodge.

So now the dust has settled, I can put on this post of Bro Harry Thayne's Exaltation to the 4th Degree. Our sincerest thanks go to the Kingdom of Fife Roll of Honour Assembly for carrying out a most excellent ceremony and to all of the visitors who came from near and far to make this such a special occasion. Our thanks also go to the Grand Primo and Grand Officers for their unexpected, but most welcome visit to make Bo Harry's day even more memorable.
