Glentrool Holiday Cottage

Glentrool Holiday Cottage Two cosy two-bed bungalows in Glentrool, the only village inside the Dark Sky Park. The hot water is an "on-demand" system.

Culsharg Cottage and Kelpies Cottage are in Glentrool, the only village inside Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park. It's a beautiful, peaceful rural location and you can expect to see some awesome starry skies, and if you're really lucky, maybe even Aurora Borealis. Glentrool is very much about the outdoors, with plenty of biking, wild swimming and walking nearby. We are right in the heart of the stun

ning Galloway Forest with trees, streams, lochs and mountains right on the doorstep. We are also proud to be part of Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Community. Both cottages are single-storey bungalows which have been recently renovated and are simply, but colourfully decorated with comfortable beds. Both have oil-fired central heating and a log burning stove in the living room for those cosy winter nights. The kitchens are modern and have cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, washing machine, kettle, toaster, and dishwasher. Culsharg has a walk-in shower, while Kelpies has a bath with shower over. Culsharg has a double bed in one bedroom and three singles in the other. Kelpies has a double in one bedroom, and a double and single in the other. So both cottages sleep up to 5 people. Fresh bed linen is provided for each guest along with a bath towel for each guest and hand towels for the kitchen and bathroom. In the living room there are a couple of small sofas and a table/chairs for meals, but while there is a TV and DVD player provided in the cottage, there is no TV reception (or licence) at the cottage. There is a ROKU which you can use to access your own Amazon, Netflix etc. There is a free Wi-Fi in both cottages. Dogs or other pets are welcome and the gardens of both cottages are fully enclosed (we do ask that you keep dogs off the furniture and out of the bedrooms please). Outside, there is a lovely peaceful garden space. There is secure bike storage (a shed!) and bike wash facilities (a hose!). There is plenty of space on the driveway for parking.

Here's the second in our series showcasing our favourite five walks within half an hour's drive of the cottagesπŸ₯Ύβ›°οΈπŸ‘£

If you want to get up into the hills and get some fantastic mountain views, but don’t want to deal with rough terrain, this is the walk for you! The panoramic view at the top of Bennan is spectacular, looking over to Benyellary and the Dungeon range. And you will rarely see another human on this walk!

The trail is on forest road all the way, so technically very easy and perfect for anyone who is inexperienced with hillwalking, or for younger walkers. You can even cycle it if you have a mountain bike and strong legs! Our route starts from Glentrool Visitor Centre, but it’s also walkable from the cottages if you want to add an extra 3km.

The walk starts by heading up the three waymarked trails from the Visitor Centre. But as soon as you reach the crossroads with the forest road, instead of continuing straight on for the waymarked trails, turn left onto the forest road and start the gentle ascent. You will soon see the mast on top of Bennan in the distance – that’s your destination! The forest road will take you all the way to the top - it climbs gently at first through the trees, but gets steeper towards the end!

As you get close to the top you get lovely views over to Benyellary ahead and Kirriereoch, and pass a pretty wee lochan.

At the top there is a summit cairn next to the radio mast and the views over across the other hills are fantastic.

Put it on your list for your next visit!

You may remember last year we did a series of posts showcasing the fabulous walks you can do right from the front door of our cottages (which we have now made into a booklet for our guests!). Well now it's time for our favourite five walks within half an hour's drive. πŸ₯Ύβ›°οΈπŸ‘£

Here's the first one, a definite favourites that we do regularly! This is a beautiful but short hill walk, giving you great bang for your buck. It’s not too strenuous or long but you will really feel as if you are out in the hills, and get some great views.

The path starts through some woods, eventually leaving the trees behind and continuing up onto the open moorland. You really start to feel like you are out in the wilds, despite only being half an hour from your car! The path rises steadily but not too steeply, up onto the top of Cornish Hill where there are great views in all directions.

After the cairn the path zig-zags downhill to reach beautiful Cornish Loch. This is an gorgeous spot to stop for a picnic, and a swim if you’re feeling brave - if you look closely you can see two humans (heads!) and a spaniel swimming in one of the photos πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

After leaving the loch, the path rises again and runs alongside the river, and eventually leads back to the road and the car park.

Have you tried this walk? or is it on your list for your next visit? let us know if you have done it, and what you thought!

It's less than two weeks until Glentrool Forest Festival and we are really looking forward to it!!

We are both involved in the festival - Beth will be hosting a swim with Mental Health Swims Loch Trool and both of us will be singing some tunes for an hour ish at 12.00 on the Sunday.

There's loads of very cool activities, bike rides with our friends Glentrool Cycleworks, plus delicious food and drink and live music, so come along and join in the fun!
