It might look like a rock sitting quietly off the East Lothian coast, but Bass Rock is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of northern gannets. And simply put, the white is just bird poo 😂

This volcanic plug is around 100 metres high and becomes home to tens of thousands of gannets during the breeding season.
But there’s more to Bass Rock than wildlife. Over the centuries it has also been home to a castle, used as a prison and later became the site of a lighthouse.
You can spot it from several places along the East Lothian coast, including North Berwick, Tantallon Castle and Seacliff Beach - but seeing it up close from the water is something else.
