North Berwick Law (locally known as “The Law”) is a distinctive, conical hill that rises 187 metres (614 feet) above sea level, dominating the skyline of the coastal town of North Berwick in East Lothian, Scotland.

The word “law” comes from the Lowland Scots term for a pointed or cone-shaped hill.
The hill is a volcanic plug formed roughly 300 million years ago. It is all that remains of the lava plug from an active volcano; glacial erosion during the last ice age carved away the softer surrounding rock, leaving behind a classic “crag and tail” formation.

An evening walk on the beach is the most peaceful thing to do here. More often than not, you’ll be the only person there, and you get uninterrupted views.
We may be biased but we think it’s one of the most beautiful east coast beaches in Scotland.
