Celebrating four years since we opened to guests at All Hallows Guesthouse. Since then we have hosted more than 2200 guests for over 5000 nights. Swipe to see the transformation of our much-loved sitting room.

In case you missed it: we are fundraising! We need another £160,000 to reach our goal to turn the loft at All Hallows into liveable space, open up new guest rooms, improve front entry disabled access and install a traditional lych-gate entrance to the upper Shrine areas.

The theme of our artist in residence’s work at the Julian Shrine is ’Temporal, Spatial, Spiritual’ and her most recent art responds to all three concepts in a unique way. Part of her ‘Bowls in a Fragile World’ series made from junk paper and packaging, this month’s ’Time Bowl’ considers the temporal rhythm of the day as Julian might have experienced it.

Speaking about the ’Time Bowl’, the artist commented: ’The rhythm of the day for Julian in her anchorage would have been dominated by day and night, prayer and contemplation. Pondering how to convey this sense of time, I focussed on dawn and dusk, lauds and vespers, dark and light. Eventually I tried to capture the moment when a candle is lit at night, or is not longer needed at dawn. The bowl’s central line is symbolic of this moment.’

The bowl is available to see now - do come and visit before it’s gone!

We had a fantastic walking pilgrimage to Walsingham this week, almost 40 miles from Norwich to the Shrines of Our Lady of Walsingham. Our intrepid pilgrims braved the heat, sheltering in ancient stone churches, enjoying pilgrim hospitality on the way and at last made it safe and sound to journey’s end.

If you would like to join us this year on pilgrimage to this holy place, there are still a couple of spaces available for our August pilgrimage so don’t delay: visit julianshrine.org/events to register your place!

We have planning approval!

Our Phase One project has been approved by Norwich City Council which means we can move forward on our plans to expand All Hallows Guesthouse by utilising the empty loft space, as well as making improvements to the upper entrance to the Shrine with new accessible brick paving, visitor centre front door, and traditional lychgate inscribed with the words of Julian of Norwich.

We still need to raise at least £160,000 to reach our goal of £400,000 for all the works. Spread the word and help us make this a reality!

This July marks the one year anniversary since the start of artist Debra Shipley’s two-year residency at the Julian Shrine. Reflecting on the last year, Debra says:

‘I can hardly believe that I have been Artist in Residence for a whole year; time has flown by during what has been a hugely positive experience. A year ago I picked and pressed a few flowers and leaves in the Julian Shrine garden which I subsequently incorporated into a paper bowl as part of my “Bowls in a Fragile World” collection. This particular bowl needed to be shallow to support the flattened delicate plants and in the end has turned out to be almost a plate! It is however, I think, very pretty and a joyful reflection of how happy I have been creating art in response to my “Temporal, Spatial, Spiritual” brief”.’

The Anniversary Bowl will be on display throughout late June and July. Do come to the Shrine and see it for yourself if you can. More of Debra’s artwork is on show in our visitor centre, open 10am-3:30pm (closed Sunday and Wednesday).
