With history comes fact, and fiction.

In our years delving into some of the forgotten stories of our fine city, we have uncovered some real misconceptions that have persisted. But we want to hear yours.

What are the amazing facts that have you saying, "actually, I think you'll find..."?

We will start you off with one of our favourites. The fact that history books sometimes get the wrong date. We all know about the great fire that robbed Norwich of many of its thatched buildings in the 1500s.

Many people quote the date as 1507, but that's not quite right. The fire actually took place in 1508. Only a year out, but a year that has been getting away with it for centuries.

So let us know. What myths would you like to see busted? What legends have you heard a different version of? What moments and places in Norwich aren't quite what they seem?

We love a good "well, actually" in the comments.

Today marks D-Day, the day Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy as part of efforts to end the Second World War.

A day that is significant across Europe and the world, but also important to Norfolk.

On the morning of the 6th of June, large formations of Liberator aircraft from the American air base in Horsham St Faith (458th Bombardment) were seen passing overhead. Joining them were the Rackheath Aggies (467th Bombardment), with aircraft Blonde Bomber, Belle of the East and Perils of Pauline, heading to support the push.

Did you also know that The Forum houses a memorial to the American troops who fought during the war? It is housed in the American Library and is a reminder of the history and lives of the people who came to our county to live and fight.

It’s a day of reflection for many, with casualties in the thousands, most are left feeling thankful and touched by the sacrifices made by so many.

The best Father’s Day gifts don’t always come wrapped.

Between now until 19th June dads go free when booking onto the Norwich’s Hidden Street Tour.

Sometimes the best gift is a few hours together. A walk through the city and a catch up, a shared story, a laugh at something unexpected together, and the kind of moment you remember long after the day itself.

This Father’s Day, treat Dad to Norwich’s Hidden Street Tour and spend time exploring the local history you both love.

The offer is valid for visits up to 30th June, giving you plenty of time to plan a day together.

Use code FREEDAD and give the gift of time, history and something to talk about all the way home.

We know how lucky we are to have Max on the team, and anyone who has joined one of his tours is likely to agree.

His love for history is infectious, and he has been instrumental in shaping two of our newest tours: Carrow House and The Forgotten Vaults, and The Old Rifle Range and Underground Norwich.

Max has a real gift for uncovering stories long forgotten, weaving them together to create an engaging experience for everyone who walks with him.

We are so pleased to have him as part of the team, and we know many of you will join us in saying thank you to such a wonderful member of The Shoebox Experiences family.

Planning summer holiday days out with the kids?

Summer dates for many of our tours are now live, and it is a rather brilliant way to spend time together as a family.

You might not realise it, but many of our tours are suitable for all ages. They're fun, fact-filled and have just the right amount of spooky.

A little history, a little mystery, and a very good reason to get out of the house this summer.

On this day in 1919, Edith Cavell came home.

Four years earlier, in October 1915, Edith had been court-martialled and executed by German forces in Brussels for helping Allied soldiers escape occupied Belgium.

Her death shocked the country. But Edith herself was remembered for her courage, compassion and extraordinary calm.

When her body was returned to Britain after the war, King George V attended a memorial service at Westminster Abbey. Not Norwich Cathedral, as you might expect, before a special train carried her home to Norwich.

She arrived at Thorpe Station, where crowds gathered to pay their respects.

From there, Edith was taken to Norwich Cathedral, where she was laid to rest at Life’s Green, next to the Cathedral’s St Saviour’s Chapel which was built as a memorial to Norfolk’s fallen in the First World War.

It is one of those moments in history that feels both very public and deeply personal.

A national farewell.
A Norfolk homecoming.
And the return of a woman whose quiet bravery was never forgotten.
