in 1614, Robert Smythson, architect of our stunning Wollaton Hall, died.

Considered one of England's first and foremost professional architects, it's believed that Smythson began surveying the build of Wollaton Hall between 1580 and 1588, for Sir Francis Willoughby and his family. By that time he had already completed Longleat in Wiltshire, and would later go on to build the famous Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire.

He lived in Wollaton until his death, and is memorialised in St Leonard's Church, remembered as "Architector and Surveyor unto the most worthy house of Wollaton with divers others of great account."

A sports themed guided tour?
You can learn about Nottingham’s history of cricket with the tour guide 🏏

Cricket was Bendigo's other sport that he excelled in, and what a season it's been in the East Midlands.

As the 2025 County Championship season begins the final matches today, with
Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club having the title in their hands, and Leicestershire securing a top-flight return for the first time since 2003.

Bendigo’s interest and involvement with the sport of cricket is well recorded. Not only was the man himself a capable cricketer, he was also a regular visitor to Trent Bridge cricket ground from its inception in the 1830s.

He'll be 'in the crowd' today at Trent Bridge cheering on his club.

Here's the story:
