We recently joined our returning guests, young Alice and Dave on a fantastic sea fishing day out from Oban, skippered by Leigh Taylor on his boat, 'Laura Dawn II'.

Several hours were enjoyed, initially catching many Mackerel and a single Po***ck and a Whiting. Soon...the bigger fish were landed! Alice achieved her goal of catching a Blackmouthed Dogfish and Karen landed the largest Skate weighing 168 lbs! The scenery in The Firth of Lorne to the west of Kerrera was stunning and we were most lucky with the weather on the day.

We would thoroughly recommend a trip out with Leigh.

Here at The Old Cottage, we are very fortunate to have many natural history visitors come to our garden. For example, our guests and ourselves have seen Red Squirrel, Rabbit, Field Mouse, Bank Vole, Stoat, Weasel, Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and White-tailed Eagle in addition to Swallows, Siskins, Great spotted Woodpeckers, Treecreepers and many more species. Even Gannets can be watched distantly plunge diving into the sea from our dining room.

Recently, we have been delighted to spot some new visitors including a Barn Owl occupying the nearby old Victorian school house, Spotted Flycatcher, Nuthatches in our small woodland and a fantastic Pine Marten which has performed on a few occasions now.

Nestled in the heart of beautiful Argyll and only a two-hour journey by car or rail from Glasgow, Loch Awe is Scotland’s longest freshwater loch spanning 41km of unspoilt, rugged and magical beauty.

Situated just to the east of The Old Cottage, Scotland's longest freshwater loch has much to offer and it's a great alternative to visit when staying here for more than one night.

There are ancient forests, interesting villages, nature, fishing opportunities and so much history to explore.
