Stag season is upon us 🍂🦌

As autumn arrives, we offer guests the opportunity to join our Stalker and Ghillie for a traditional Red Deer stalking experience on the wild hills of Morvern.

Spend a day immersed in the magnificent Highland landscape, learning about a practice that has been part of life in the Highlands for centuries.

Deer management is an important part of our wider conservation and regeneration efforts here at Ardtornish. Our venison is sold in The Old Dairy Gift Shop, used in our homemade ready meals and served at The Coal Shed Cafe — making the most of a sustainable, locally sourced resource.

A little fact to start the week: Pine Martens can rotate their hind feet backwards, helping them climb out of their beds and down tree trunks head-first.

Basically, they’re considerably better at Monday mornings than we are😴

🐿️ Help us keep an eye on Morvern’s Red Squirrels!

In 2022, 21 Red Squirrels were translocated to Lochaline, followed by a further six to another site on Morvern in 2024.

The hope is that, as woodland cover improves, these populations will gradually expand along the coast towards Ardnamurchan, helping to reconnect fragmented red squirrel populations and strengthen their future on the west coast of Scotland. 🌳

The Great Scottish Red Squirrel Survey goes live tomorrow, giving everyone the chance to help conservationists understand how red squirrel populations are faring across Scotland — and whether conservation efforts are having the desired effect.

Red squirrels are increasingly being spotted around Ardtornish, so if you’ve visited us recently and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one of these elusive, bushy-tailed residents, we’d love for you to report your sighting using the link below.

Every sighting helps build a bigger picture of where Scotland’s Red Squirrels are thriving. ❤️🐿️

🌧️ One year ago today, Morvern was bracing itself...

On Friday 3 October 2025, Storm Amy arrived with some force — and with her came a very raw side to our corner of the west coast.

Hundreds of trees came down, blocking access to and from the village, all ferries were cancelled and Morvern was left without power for five days!

It has taken all of the last year to clear the trees at Ardtornish and now, the woodland is quietly getting on with its recovery🌲

With a particularly strong El Niño currently developing in the Pacific, forecasters are warning that the UK could be in for a wetter and stormier than average late autumn and early winter…it looks like we may have another dramatic season ahead 💨

Standing proudly at the head of Loch Aline, Kinlochaline is one of Morvern’s most distinctive historic buildings

The castle dates from the 15th century, with its commanding position overlooking the River Aline and Loch Aline making it a naturally strategic place. It has seen its fair share of history too — including being captured and burned during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1644, before eventually falling into ruin.

Its Gaelic name is Caisteal an Ime — Castle of Butter. According to local legend, a lady of Clan MacInnes named paid the builders for the castle with an amount of butter equivalent to the size of the building 🧈 Quite the dairy bill.

Today, the beautifully restored castle remains a striking feature of the Morvern landscape — and one of those places that makes you wonder just how many stories these old walls could tell.

🐜 Last year, we translocated eight Wood Ant nests to Ardtornish from a site that was due to be felled. We’re delighted to report that, after surviving their first winter and second summer in their new home, the colonies are not only thriving — they’re expanding! 🌿

At our latest count, we found nine active nest sites, with the ants having moved around considerably over the past 18 months as they search for the perfect sunny spot to settle.

We’ll continue to monitor them closely to see whether they’ve now found their forever homes — or whether they have more exploring to do!

You may spot bamboo rods with pink tape marking various locations around the grounds. These show where the ants were last seen on a sunny day in September. Some of the nests are surprisingly unassuming, slowly building up amongst the heather and bracken, so please take care when walking through these areas and watch your step!

It’s fantastic to see these important little colonies settling into their new home at Ardtornish. 💚

🏡 A glimpse into Achranich’s past…

One of our much-loved holiday homes, Achranich was built in 1880, replacing the original farmhouse of what was then Achranich Estate.

From the outside, the building remains remarkably unchanged. But take a closer look at these original architect’s drawings and they offer a fascinating glimpse into how Achranich was once laid out — and just how much the building’s life has changed over the past 140 years.

Today, the back of Achranich is home to the Ardtornish team. Our Tourism team spend their working days in what was once the Wash House and Cheese Room (more’s the pity that the cheese room no longer features!), while our Gift Shop occupies what was once the Dairy.

It’s rather lovely to think that, all these years later, Achranich is still a busy part of life at Ardtornish — just in a slightly different way🕰️
