Sound of Harris

Sound of Harris Sound of Harris is a distinctive, award winning development of self-catering accommodation at Borrisdale in the Isle of Harris

It’s been four years in the making, our very own 'Grand Design' - although, thankfully, without the camera crew in tow! In March 2010, we were fortunate to acquire a 0.5 acre feu in Borrisdale township, 2 miles from the Leverburgh ferry, with a view to establishing a new life and home for ourselves and a holiday letting business which now nears completion. The houses nestle close to the inlet of P

ort Eisgein, on former crofted land, with a unique, isolated clifftop location - close to the distinctive promontory of Renish Point, which forms the south east tip of the island. On a clear day, the site commands views from Skye across to the Uists, Berneray, Killegray, Ensay and Pabbay beyond. Our design has evolved considerably during the build - dictated by necessity and the challenges presented by the remote location and the local Lewisian geology! Most notably, we chose to ditch the initially planned structural insulated panel system for a more simple, practical and traditional approach. The construction has been inspired by the classic 'Department' croft house of the early twentieth century - rendered masonry gables, timber infill and framing and a sheeted roof - but updated to embrace sound principles of sustainable construction and the best of classic British mid-century interior design and, naturally, Luskentyre Harris Tweed. We love Harris and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to set up home and start a business in one of the most interesting, challenging and special places in the UK. In many respects, there’s nothing that can be said about the Hebrides as a destination that hasn’t been said before - those who have visited will know. We look forward to welcoming our first guests in 2015.

After 7 seasons of holiday rentals, we’ll soon be taking our larger property, The Big House, off the market. Looking back, it’s been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience and we’ve welcomed hundreds of guests, many of whom have become regulars and firm friends – so this is an opportunity to say a sincere thanks to everyone for their support over the years. We’re also very much looking forward to making the Big House our family home from the end of October. As I write, I have all the paperwork for the completion certificate relating to our renovation of the former Leverburgh post office on the desk, so we’re on track for the launch of our new holiday apartment, Leverburgh Loft. We now have the Loft up on the website calendar for bookings from April next year. We’ve also been busy with putting together the interior design, so hope to be able to share some images with you soon.

Scotland is a destination that does cosy countryside hideouts like no other. We’ve pulled together the best bothies and Scandi-Scot-style boltholes that still have availability for autumn/ winter 2020. Planning a staycation? Book now, before we do.

Just to let everyone know we’re reopening the Leverburgh shop from tomorrow, with core hours 12 noon – 6 pm, Monday to Saturday. We’d respectfully ask that only one family/household group enter the shop at a given time and that face coverings be worn and hands sanitised on entry. Card or Apple/Google Pay if possible please. We do have a range of face coverings made and available to purchase, if anyone needs one. These are fully washable/reusable, double ply and in a range of high quality cotton prints and weaves.
