CLIMATE WEEK - 4TH-10TH MARCH
In climate change week we are rigorously monitoring the use of electricity at Upcott House with a view to putting measures in place to reduce our electricity consumption i.e. LED lighting, A+++ rated electrical goods and an amusingly delivered behaviour change programme for residents and guests that encourages them to ‘switch off’ their electrical appliances when they are not in use. Last week we engaged with other Green Tourism businesses to share what we are all doing on the energy efficiency front as part of the Green Tourism Network run by Neil Warren from South West Tourism.

The new extended range Vauxhall Ampera with guests stopping over to charge their car over night. Getting quite busy at our public electric car charging point now. A second Renault Kangoo is charging tonight. That makes 14 EVs to date that have made use of the point. Good to see demand growing.

A beautiful sunny start to the day here in Okehampton. Great to see families coming down to stay with us to enjoy the Polar Express up at the Dartmoor Railway Station. Lucy rounded off her birthday treat by coming out to feed the chickens and collect the day's eggs freshly laid for breakfast.

A 10Kw(9.87) Ground Mounted Solar PV Array
Projected FIT per annum – £3797.32. Total savings and FIT per annum - £995.23 (electricity) Return on investment - £16%. Number of years return – 5.8 years. Installed by EcoConcepts from South Brent, Devon. Best bit of all - free fuel for our electric car! Film of the installation coming soon. We did the ground works hiring our digger from a local company in Okehampton to save on any extra outlay for trench digging. Our electricity bills are £4000 per year so this will defray the cost nicely. If you have the money it is a 'no brainer' of an investment, but get in quick before government reduce the feed in tariffs next April.

Electric Quad Day on Dartmoor at Wiz's farm absolutely excellent. Wiz did us some great bangers and mash and then Fred, Wendy, Wiz, Ollie and Steve went out to put the electric quad through its paces in some of the most inhospitable regions of the moor. The introduction of electric quads is part of my EDF backed EvFriendly project to introduce electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Dartmoor. Fred Chugg from Key Pitts Quads at Ilfracombe who has the second EVCS In Devon is a farmer turned electric quad engineer. He charges his quads from a small wind turbine on the roof of his shed. The energy for the quads then costs him nothing compared to the £100s that petrol/diesel was costing him to run his quads. If farmers converted to using these quads with a small energy micro-generation scheme to power them they would be saving energy, money and be being kinder to the environment by reducing their carbon footprint.
