Discover Saddleworth: This Week at Akila Holiday Home

Some feedback means more than others, and this one's staying pinned up in the kitchen for a while.

The wonderful dancers of Madder Mill Molly stayed with us over Saddleworth Rushcart 2026, and instead of leaving a review online, they left us this note by hand — signed by Karen, Dena, Helen, Ruth, Alan and Sharon:

"Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful property. Spotlessly clean and very well appointed. We really enjoyed the hot tub — perfect for weary Morris dancers. I am sure we would all love to stay again!"

Madder Mill Molly are a proper, established side — dancing the Molly style of Morris with real skill and years of practice, not just a bit of fun in the street. After a full day of that, we're glad the hot tub could do its job.

Akila is our holiday home nestled in Saddleworth, and each week we're sharing a little something to discover — whether it's tucked inside the house itself or just down the road in the village. This week, we're staying in and looking at the books.

Tucked into corners throughout the house you'll find whole worlds waiting: a hamper brimming with well-loved Famous Five adventures, their covers soft with age and a hundred rainy afternoons. A quiet cabinet lined with leather-bound Dickens, gold lettering catching the light — Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities among them. Elsewhere there are shelves of Tintin and Asterix for anyone chasing a bit of mischief, a run of Harry Potter for the young (and young at heart), and a good stretch of Tolkien for those who'd rather be in Middle-earth than anywhere else.

And if you climb the stairs and know where to look, there's a little Narnia cupboard waiting — just the right size for anyone who still believes a wardrobe might lead somewhere else entirely.

🌿🍇 Wild whimberries at Padley Gorge – a true Saddleworth summer magic! 🍇🌿
Spent the day with Anna, our brilliant herbalist guide, wandering through the forests and moorland around Padley Gorge. To our delight, we stumbled across some ripe whimberries (bilberries) glistening among the heather and ferns. Perfect timing—the wild bilberry season in northern England traditionally spans July through September with berries typically ripening from August into early autumn
So yes, the season is very much ongoing!

With our bounty in hand, we made jam that tasted like childhood: that tangy sweetness, rich purple swirls, and the nostalgic thrill of having purple-stained tongues just like when we were kids. It felt like time traveling—with every spoonful, memories of eager summer foraging trips and those mischievous purple-stained grins came flooding back.

To anyone from our part of the world, I reckon you know exactly the feeling I’m talking about. Here’s to wild hedgerows, childhood memories, jam-making with friends—and all the rich, purple nostalgia that comes with it. 💜✨
